The returning champion is Frankenstein (David Carradine) a veteran of many Death Races who has been so badly injured in past wrecks that he must wear a mask to hide his gruesome face.

Though rather surprisingly given its budget the film does have some fine cinematography at times of the landscapes they drive through provided by Tak Fujimoto, a man who had already worked on Badlands and would go on to great success with films like The Silence of the Lambs and The Sixth Sense.

Stallone plays a guy named Machine Gun Joe, which is actually a very good role for him, as it really doesn't ask him to do much then act like he normally acts, and for the characters in this film, it is just fine.
