The Village

The teaser trailer's out.

Austruck 12-21-03 12:50 AM

Note to Self: Don't watch trailers like this so close to midnight....

I want my mommy. :(

nebbit 12-21-03 04:22 AM

The trailer looks really good, I have to wait till July to see it!, I wonder if that means that we may get it in Aussie before next christmas

theshape82 12-21-03 02:24 PM

i can't see the trailer right now...i'm at work
but as soon as i get home i'll check it out and get back to you :yup:

Beale the Rippe 12-24-03 12:19 AM

I love all of M. Night's thrillers thus far, and I really want to have high hopes for this, but I've heard nothing but horrible things about the screenplay for this movie.

Hell_Bent 12-24-03 03:00 PM

I dunno about anyone else but i cant seem to watch the trailer. Is anyone else getting that?

SPIDEI2_MAN__ 12-25-03 12:30 AM

Some cast information, a summary, and a few early photos are available over on M. Night Shyamalan Online's "The Village" page.

Garrett 02-13-04 06:40 PM

I'm eagerly awaiting "The Village"

WelshBint 02-13-04 06:49 PM

Really looking forward to it - the teaser is fab.

Trying to avoid conjecture as I want to be surprised! Have to wait until the end of August in the UK (Nebbit - 9 September in Australia)

blibblobblib 02-18-04 02:30 PM

I serously cannot wait much longer for this film...

Does anyone know when a new trailer is coming out for it? I need more stuff to feed my thoughts on this film, its probably my most eagerly anticpiated film of the year.

what exactly does Post Production mean? I take it all the filming is done and Post production is when they do everything else like the score, editing, special effects etc yeah?

Yes brother, you are correct, think of it in terms of post, meaning after and production, meaning the rushes and the general filming. There ya go, its pretty sinmple. just like you...

I had no trouble viewing the trailer, looks good, that directer with the long name makes some good films.

WARNING: "The Village" spoilers below
Just found out that It's revealed that the creatures are really just human beings of "modern day" (2004 era) coming into the village while it is the people of the "Village" that are the ones stuck in their old fashioned 19th century fabrication made up by the John Hurst character of the film ... A flick about People afraid of change ... beyond the forest is modern society of today (no creatures of any kind but ourselves). John Hurst's character is the one who kills the animals and puts blood on the doors so that the people of the village believe that creatures really exist when in fact they dont. THis is from the last revision to the script. Kinda predictable though  :(

Yeah im choosing not to read it. can someone edit it and put a spoiler box round it??

Just because Shyamalan (sp?) has used twists in all his other films, people seem quite addament to guess what the twist is gonna be for this film. its so stupid. I think most peoaple would agree with me that one of the most interesting elements of Shyamalans work is the twist, so why bother guessing and predicting whats its gonna be and telling the world.

Does NO ONE enjoy the element of suprise any more??

Yoda 04-11-04 10:14 AM

What's your problem, man? You just assumed that everyone here would want to know the ending? I sure as hell didn't. I've deliberately avoided spoilers about this film in hopes that I could really enjoy seeing it the first time.

That was horribly rude of you.

Tea Barking 04-11-04 04:59 PM

Phew, thankgoodness for the spoiler tag :)
Thats how the sixth sence was spolied for me, some guy on live tv gave away the plot twist

led_zeppelin 04-11-04 06:06 PM

DANG IT MAN why did you write that?! I don't know who I should be more angry at me for reading or you for writing it. But now I know the ****** ending and I'm really frickin mad. Now I'll go off and cry.

Thank the lord I didn't read that...

I did see on another site that a new trailer is coming out next week though, that should be pretty good... I loved the teaser, pretty creepy...

The Silver Bullet 04-26-04 10:26 PM

M. Night Shyamalan does nothing for me at all.

LordSlaytan 04-26-04 10:42 PM

He doesn't even know you. What are you expecting, an unsigned check?

Seriously tho', I've enjoyed his last three and will be seeing the newest with a screener pass I'm sure. Man, I wasn't thinking at highlighted the first sentence of that friggin spoiler. Should be deleted, dammit.

IMO I think M Night is one of the best director-writers out there. He consistently through all his movies offers new and classic ways of writing and shooting his films. I will be there opening night for this one.

mott hamble 04-27-04 12:35 PM

I agree completely, they all add original twists to somewhat standard themes. I think signs was great simply b/c of the anticipation of seeing the aliens... I am much more excited about the village after seeing the new trailer last night. Does anyone have a link to it? Is it even online yet?

Yeah I watched "The Sixth Sense" on ABC last night and he showed the premier trailer during that..then he said next Monday "Unbreakable" will be on and he will show a 7 minute clip of the new one..yeyey!

projectMayhem 04-27-04 05:43 PM

Hey Yoda what exactly did you mean when you said that this was the third in an unofficial trilogy beginning with Unbreakable? What's the connection between the three?

Isn't this his 4th? Unbreakable, 6th Sense, and Signs before? Which one are you leaving out?

Also, when is this coming out?

I'm not entirely positive; I just heard Shyamalan say that the three films were meant to constitute some sort of loose trilogy. I imagine the connection is primarily in message and tone, rather than characters. They all have a similar feel, and so far the first two share similar themes (finding meaning and purpose).

The Sixth Sense is apparently not part of the trilogy, though it would seem to sort of fit.

He also directed Praying With Anger and Wide Awake, but this is his fourth mainstream, significant release, yes.

blibblobblib 04-29-04 02:17 PM

At last, something for me to sink my teeth into!

Absoloulty loved the trailer, he gets it perfect every time, even before releasing the films! I like how they do not include the titles of his other films in the trailers as many trailers often do. i.e - "From the director of The Sixth Sense". Adds a bit more mystery to the film....even though we all know who the writer and director is.....you know what i mean. I also love it how theres no annoying voice over, like that guy from the Van Helsing trailer. Eugh his so annoying.

Love the rules that he has set up again, about staying away from the colour red and the woods etc. Reminds me a bit of the clues/rules that he has in The Sixth Sense with the clour red meaning danger/supernatural and the cold breath. Although no child actors have popped up yet? But there was a bit in a school so who knows...

Looks like this could be another Shyamalan spectacular. So good! :D :yup:

Yoda or another verteran member might be able to speak to this with more experience, but I think that is a bunch of BS... I have seen that spoiler elsewhere, but also have seen an article saying even the actors don't know the ending... And wouldn't the studio make them take the script reviews and things down? This just seems to easy to me. The trailer looks so creepy though... Who is that woman that is playing the main part?

LordSlaytan 04-30-04 02:02 PM

When the actors don't know the ending, I believe it's usually because several were filmed, and they're not told which will ultimately be on the final print.

If critical reviews, box office and "collective MoFo opinion" are all a film needs to be defined a masterwork, the world's in a pretty sad state of affairs.

I don't think that Shyamalan's an idiot, but he's certainly none-too-subtle. I still find that the major quibble I have with his films are that they feel far too manipulative than they should when you watch them [a problem that I've had on more than one occasion with Hitchcock, too]. You're never given a chance to fall into the story [or at least, I'm not] because you're always so consciously aware that Shyamalan's there, pulling strings. I love feeling the presence of a director, but I prefer it when the presence isn't sitting there, showing you its hand, going, "See? I've got you good."

There's already a thread on the movie wherein I and others have refuted a lot of those points.

I have almost no doubt whatsoever that your sentiments here are a direct result of your status as an amateur filmmaker.

The Silver Bullet 04-30-04 10:31 PM

I prefer "student filmmaker" to "amateur filmmaker," Chingo.

And personally, I don't think that's the only reason at all, though, yeah, it's certainly a reason. I've spoken to a number of other people who aren't student [or amateur] filmmakers and they've felt the same way I do. You don't have be a filmmaker to see the strings Shyamalan pulls. The magic of atmosphere and mood, for me, is broken when its construction is clearly visible or badly hidden, as it is in The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable. Now, if there was an actual reason for this [if he was making a comment on "cinema" or "form" or whatever, for example], then I'd be fine with it. But he isn't, so it's just...badly hidden manipulation.

In my opinion, of course. If you like him, power to you. He doesn't do anything for me is what I'm saying, both as a filmmaker and as an audience member.

StarSailor 05-01-04 08:14 PM

Anyway, back to topic.

I only saw the extended trailer, and not the teaser, and it looked awesome! Shyamalan is a great talent.

Thanks you Yoda, for taking appropriate actions when important facts about the ending were announced by some idiots!

I see what you are saying, but how do you know this ISN'T different? I mean, it seems to me like evryne thinks they have this movie all figured out, and after seeing the extended trailers and reading about it, I think we are all being fooled. M Night isn't going to let all that info out... I might be wrong, but it just seems to me like we are all in for a surprise.

Like I said though, I might be wrong, so don't make fun of me if it IS the ending, but doesn't it seem like it might have been intentionally leaked?

KittyJunkie 07-15-04 12:27 AM

If it did end the way the spoiler described it to, I'd think M. Night'd be a genius to pull this off! Sounds like it'd end up kinda like the Blair Witch Project - You either love it (the un-predictable storyline, and powerful build up) or hate it (lack of action, and disappointing end).

I only got to see a few minutes of it. Does anyone know when it will be back on?

Sedai 07-20-04 04:44 PM

I watched for as long as I could, but it was pretty bad. Reminded me of the Blair Witch scam sci fi pulled, but in this one, nothing happens. Actually, nothing happened in the Blair Witch special either, but it semed more interesting at the time.

led_zeppelin 07-21-04 10:55 PM

I watched "Buried Secrets of M. Night Shyamalan" on Sci-Fi and it was about how Night actually talks to ghosts, and his thing about water is that he fell through ice on a lake and drowned as a kid, and when he was rescued he was clinically dead and stuff. But every time Night would be asked about it, he answeres were hidden by conviniently placed audio problems. It was also said that Johnny Depp was cast as Mel Gibson's character first for Signs, and they interviewed him about it. It wasn't very good for a documentary.

Mer De Noms 07-23-04 01:19 AM

it was a mocumentary! just a whole promotional stunt for his new movie the village.
but it did freak me out in some places in the mocumentary.

Yoda 07-23-04 01:24 AM

I've gotten several silly emails from what I presume are very young people who are convined that the special was completely real. A couple have even gone so far as to argue with me and insist that it's legit after I linked them to a CNN.com article detailing the Sci-Fi Channel's admission.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Insanity Rulez 07-27-04 10:47 PM

With opening night a few days away, the anticipation that I have been feeling for this movie is at a fever pitch. The only thing is,is that I can just kill myself for reading this entire thread..sigh.I know its my own fault,I should have stopped when I realized what it was I was reading.Honestly,if this is really how the film ends, this would be really disapointing.IMO of course.Regardless of how the movie ends,I'll see it with an open mind and see if it actually works. Here's hoping for some really evil creatures beyond the borders.

ProfGreen 07-29-04 03:27 PM

I'm a big fan of Shyamalan's films too -- so i'm REALLY looking forward to seeing this as well.

I just read the review for the film on CNN.com where the critic says that this is Shyamalan's best film yet -- which is great news. I'm also looking forward to seeing Bryce Dallas Howard -- he's had nothing but fantastic things to say about her.

I'm trying to get into the sneak peak that they're having here tonight -- hopefully I'll be successful.

CyCL3 08-06-04 02:48 AM

..... well i saw the movie a few days ago, and maybe its just me but i hated it. i really dont want to ruin anyhitng to anyone cuz the trailers made sure that u have no idea what this movie was about untill you saw it. ill say one thing: it is a very strict love it or hate it movie. if you are expecting a typical scary movie about creatures and are expecting those apects then ur atthe wrong movie. thats all im going to say. but im glad that i went to the matena(Sp?) cuz for me it really wastn worth it. i was very disaponted, the storyline is good, but its not the type you would expect after seeing the trailer. i htink the trailer is misguiding....

Austruck 08-06-04 09:47 AM

I don't understand why folks still go into Shyamalan movies with so many preconceived notions. After SIGNS, haven't people learned to go in with open minds, willing to be led wherever Shyamalan wants to take them? For those of you who've seen the movie, don't you agree that the trailers HAVE to take you that way, HAVE to do what they do? Isn't that a lot of the point? What else could the trailers do?

I also think if you went into the movie with the ending spoiled for you already, you'd have a very different experience. I made sure NOT to expose myself to spoilers and I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Shyamalan played with us, and I played back by going in eyes innocently wide open. I didn't let the trailers lead me down a rabbit trail but instead *knew* I could be in for *anything* with this guy.

I would have thought at least that much about the guy was obvious by now.
