slightly 'lesser known' ones from me:
Days of Being Wild 1990
The Commitments 1991
The Player 1992
Rebels of the Neon God 1992
Vive L'Amour 1994
Il Postino 1994
A Moment of Innocence 1996
Trees Lounge 1996
Voices Through Time 1996
Taste of Cherry 1997

The trick is not minding
In terms of Tsai Ming-liang, do you have a noticeably stronger preference for Viva L'Amour over Rebels of the Neon God, since they're both eligible for this countdown?
I haven’t seen Rebels of a Neon God yet, so I couldn’t say if one is better than the other.

Would you say that's your favorite decade for popular culture stuff?
I like 90's music the most. 90's movies are not necessarily my favorite.

I'm not a big fan of 80's music, but I saw some 80's movies while growing up in the 90's on TV. But obviously I prefer 90's popular culture over 80's.

Trouble with a capital "T"
I don't imagine any of the picks I'd throw out there are that unknown, but I guess might on the periphery of maybe people have heard of them but haven't seen them, so I guess this is a reminder they exist/are from that decade.
  • Flowers of Shanghai
  • Beau Travail
  • Taste of Cherry
  • Derek Jarman's Blue
  • Brighter Summer Day
  • Porco Rosso
...Chungking Express, then Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild are also worth checking out).
So glad you mentioned Flowers of Shanghai I had been meaning to watch that, then it slipped my mind. Good list, thanks!

These are some of my favorite 1990s movies that I would recommend:

While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Paradise (1991)
Heart and Souls (1993)
Ghost (1990)
Dave (1993)
The American President (1995)
Good Will Hunting (1997)

I also made a custom list of some of my favorite movies from the 1990s:
https://www.movieforums.com/lists/custom/502
(It's not in any ranked order. It's just sorted by year.)
Thanks GBG, I will check out your custom list.

Actually The Postman / Il Postino has been mentioned by three mofos; Jc, Quint and Robert. Vive L'Amour by two; Wyldesyde and Robertx2.

The Postman is a movie that I really liked, but for some reason I'm hesitant to watch it again as I don't want to find out I know don't like it. That's happened to me before with movies.

Great list! I'll second some titles that I think are going to need some help with points:

Presumed Innocent
The Hunt for Red October
The Thomas Crown Affair
The Fugitive
Dances with Wolves
Tremors
Space Jam
Galaxy Quest
Good Will Hunting
Primal Fear
Air Force One

Going to re-watch these two; Mr. Holland's Opus and Only You.

Society researcher, last seen in Medici's Florence
The Legend of 1900 1998 La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano
I highly recommend this movie too!
A lock for my ballot.

I don't know if you were counting me among those three, since my statements could be considered vague on the matter (technically I guess I didn't even state if I've seen either of the Tsai films). My recollection is I slightly prefer Rebels of the Neon God, but I recall the ending of Vive L'Amour hitting harder (and like them both, but there's a lot of stuff from the 90s that I like), so I don't know if both would be able to make my ballot, they're both on my shortlist. My gut says you'd like Vive L'Amour more, but I don't know what my basis is for why I think that.

Trouble with a capital "T"
Lol my taste in the 90s cinema scene are chick flicks (mainly teen films), action films and historical.
I can do chick flicks and historical and my wife like those too. Action films don't often work for me, but sometimes they do.

I'm currently watching Clueless.

There is 10 Things I Hate About You.
She's All That
Never Been Kissed
Cruel Intentions

Just to name a few.

They aren't great but enjoyable.

Tremors! That's a great one!

Bullets Over Broadway
(Woody Allen 1994)

Enjoyed this one, it was like watching Woody Allen's inner thoughts take film form. Of course Woody has done that type of film before but this one seems even more focused on Woody's thoughts on his own writing abilities and experiences making films. With that in mind I'd say Woody was very frank with his own abilities. Joan Cusack plays a Woody Allen type playwright who's latest play he refuses to comprise but of course circumstances cause him to do just that. Fun cast, especially Meg Tilly.
One of my favorite Allen films so far.

90s movie #4

Trouble with a capital "T"
I wonder if any of Woody Allen's films will make the 90s countdown? I've watched two in a row and liked them both.

Everybody Says I Love You
(Woody Allen, 1996)

Drew Barrymore was sure cute in this, @honeykid have you seen this? I was planning on watching this musical, yes Woody made a musical, for the the Musical Countdown but never got around to it. It's a fun movie, packed full of 90s stars, the time flies and the dialogue is snappy. If you like Woody Allen films this is Woody light and that's not a bad thing. I do think the one weak spot was Woody casting his own love interest as Julia Roberts, yeah right! Plus they had no chemistry.

90s movie #5

I don't think any of Woody's 90s films are great or thought of as great in the cinema fan culture and therefore votes will be spread out. Versus 70s and 80s Woody which has some excellent films. So I'm leaning to no Woody making the cut.

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Do I need to list the Kubrick, Lynch, Coens, Wong Kar Wai stuff from the 90s? I assume people know of them and if the output of those directors are their cup of tea or not, and if so they've probably seen those movies already (though if people only watched Chungking Express, then Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild are also worth checking out).
I have no idea why I didn't list Happy Together along with Fallen Angels or Days of Being Wild. Moments of it certainly seemed like a precursor effort to In the Mood for Love. Maybe I forgot it was in the 90s, but I saw it in the 90s, so that seems unlikely.

I have a custom MoFo List with my favorites HERE. If you haven't seen many or maybe even any films from these renowned filmmakers, here are my top recommendations from each of them in the 1990s that are all excellent films as well as wonderful introductions to the directors...
  • Pedro Almodóvar, All About My Mother (1999)
  • Robert Altman, Short Cuts (1993)
  • Wes Anderson, Rushmore (1998)
  • Claude Chabrol, La Cérémonie (1995)
  • Claire Denis, Beau Travail (1999)
  • Jim Jarmusch, Dead Man (1995)
  • Neil Jordan, The Butcher Boy (1996)
  • Abbas Kiarostami, Close-Up (1990)
  • Krzysztof Kieślowski, Three Colours: Red (1994)
  • Mike Leigh, Naked (1993)
  • David Lynch, The Straight Story (1999)
  • Terrence Malick, The Thin Red Line (1998)
  • Roman Polanski, Death and the Maiden (1994)
  • John Sayles, Lone Star (1996)
  • Todd Solondz, Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996)
  • Lars Von Trier, Breaking the Waves (1996)
  • Wong Kar-wai, Chungking Express (1994)
