Chef is written, directed, and starring Jon Favreau, the director of Iron Man 1 and 2, Cowboys and Aliens, and Elf. Seeing Favreau as mostly just a big budget director, I was surprised to see this great little movie come out.

Chef is the story of a divorced chef named Carl Casper who works at one of the best restaurants in town. He has a son named Percy, who really wants to be with his dad, even though Carl is too busy. (Yes, I know it's an over used subject but we'll get to that later.) Meanwhile at work, Carl's boss forces him to stick to the menu he's used for years on the night an important food critic comes to the restaurant. This leads to a bad review from the critic, which drives Carl crazy. After this a large amount of numerous events, both good and bad, happen to Carl, but I won't ruin it.

Now, I know that the whole "dad not seeing his son enough" story has been used a lot, but Favreau makes it work. The two actors really have a "Father son" sort of chemistry in the movie and it seems real, not fake and stiff like some of the Adam Sandler movies that have been produced recently. The humor in this movie does not feel forced, it flows naturally and really feels like people talking, not just actors on a movie set.

This movie is also quite entertaining for people of varying age. Young people will enjoy the emphasis on social media in the film, the strong language at times, and Jon Favreau's hipster-esque character. While older people will enjoy the touching story, all the sizzling food that makes mouths water, and the relatable characters. I do have a couple of problems with this movie though. The language at the beginning of the movie feels a bit harsh and unnecessary at times, but that smooths out as the movie goes along.

All in all, this was a really great film. I truly enjoyed it and walked out of the theater with no regrets on seeing this movie. It all wraps up rather nicely, leaving the audience with a good feeling when they leave. This is a very good father son movie and I feel that people can really relate to it. Chef is funny, touching, and entertaining.

There is just about nothing new in Chef...but it is almost irresistibly charming and fun, due to the great cast and Favreau's delightful tone and atmosphere.

Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.
Good review-- I just saw this-- very light, buoyant film, made me smile. It's nice to see a film paced this way once in a while-- I guess Favreau had to take a break from ultra-evil villains. Fun cast-- The tone is set when you have Bobby Cannavale and John Leguizamo as your wingmen.

The only thing that took away from it, was the ending seemed a little happy dappy to me. I would've preferred more of a slight edge to the film to keep it honest. But I can understand the decision to do it. All in all though, very enjoyable and fun.
