Why does Hollywood not like voluptuous actresses anymore?

If you watch old movies with Jayne Mansfield, and Marilyn Munroe, they have no problem showing off their bustiness, and cleavage, so to speak.

But movies nowadays, the actresses don't really do that, and they want to be as petite and skinny as possible it seems. Even in James Bond for example, the women now look more skinny and petite compared to how they looked in the 60s Bond movies.

But when I ask my guy friends for opinions they actually prefer, the older, more voluptuous look. So if that's true, then who is it that is pushing this petite movement, or why is there a movement at all, in movies and fashion?

I guess... Maybe it's just James Bond nowadays then and I need to watch more movies.

Arent they beautiful. You'll probably find more in the beauty appreciation thread but I have to go out in a sec so just grabbed a few photos. I noticed some curvaceous Bollywood actresses as well. Will post more shortly.

Because of Diet coke, crystal meth, energy drinks and macrobiotic fads, the trend is towards the ultra gaunt. Not to be graphic but I could never share a bed with someone who purposely made themselves that thin. I'd feel like I was sleeping with this

or this

Gillian Anderson. She's very petite but still very curvaceous

Well Bond is interesting isn't it because Monica Bellucci was in Spectre and she's definitely comparable to actresses in the period you're talking about. Then there's Gemma Arterton, who said fairly recently that Hollywood didn't know what to do with her, in reference to her figure. Eva Green has that mix of being thin but curvy and then a few of the other actresses have been of a thinner shape, my favourite being Olga Kurylenko.

It is a strange phenomenon and recently there was the Cannes Festival poster of Claudia Cardinale, doctored to make her appear thinner. I've just noticed that she has a different take on the reasons behind the alteration:

Wasn't Kate Winslet airbrushed to look super slim for a cover and she was very angry about it.

Yeah that's what actually got me to ask this question was Specter. Cause it seems that since Goldeneye, the women have gotten thinner, and thinner, until Casino Royale, where you have Eva Green.

It seemed that Eva kicked off the skinny and petite Bond girl trend, and finally Monica Belucci brought it back.

But Belucci was only in three scenes about, and they cast the much skinnier Léa Seydoux in the main role. So this seems like a case of what I was talking about. The director and producers probably said Monica Bellucci is too curvy to play the main role, let's cast the more boney actress instead.

Unless I am wrong?

Yeah, didn't they swap her body with someone elses? It was that gratuitous I think.

I don't think that would be the discussion, it was just that the character was a more mature woman and Bellucci was, really, someone they'd missed working with – which is understandable given the Bond hiatus occurring just when she was coming along. I think they were going to approach her for the role Teri Hatcher played in Tomorrow Never Dies, which would have been good.

So they didn't want her as the main bond girl, cause they would miss working with her? that makes no sense to me.

I have a lady crush

Not Bond but in general Twiggy, a model from the 60s, kicked off the crazy which eventually turned into 'heroin chic' in the fashion industry. I saw thge other day that France has banned the use of overly thin models. It causes a lot of bodydismorphia in young people, not to mention body shaming.

eg. Anna Gunn was called 'a fat ugly pig' when she looked like this on BrBa. Can you believe this??? It was outrageous.

And then when she slimmed down after getting off what I seem to recall was cortisone medication for chronic pain she was called 'an anorexic pig'. WTH is wrong with some people.

Jennifer Lawrence was also slammed for being a ' fat ugly pig'. Probably the same juvenile trolls.

Both women are exquisite. And body shaming is so damn yesterday. Doesnt matter if it's against a woman or a man.

I don't see how Anna can be called fat when she looks possibly thinner than Monica Bellucci in the first picture.

Some rabid fans of the show just hated her with a vengeance because they didn't like the character. Appalling behaviour.

Ghouls, vampires, werewolves... let's party.

I've made the same observation. It's those darn feminists.

Huh?

Yeah a lot of fans hated the character on the show, but I thought the character was fine, under the circumstances of the story. Either way though, I feel that women just look skinnier in movies now, and guys say they don't like it, so I wonder where all the support for it is coming from.

Although when I ask my friends their opinion, and they don't like it, we are not American so maybe it's an American culture thing perhaps? And even though those actresses in the pictures make their breasts stand out, you don't see that kind of stand out in movies, like Hollywood is trying to avoid it compared to before.
