Zulawski originally conceived the movie as having another major character, Anna's ex-husband, to be played by veteran actor and director Bernard Wicki, but after the first day of shooting with Wicki, he decided to drop the character entirely.

Especially drama works great, as you are sometimes left in the dark to what is happening, which is also what this movie used, and I liked that.
