You're a Genius all the time
Okay, this just came up in the shoutbox after I let slip Eva Green dies a horrible, watery death at the end of Casino Royale. So at what point is it acceptable to publicly divulge the ending of an extremely popular movie? Like, how many years after it's released? Or is it forever a no-no?

I think that, on the internet, you proceed at your own risk and you just have to assume every ending to every film is just one click away.

I'll just dupli-ma-cate my response in the The Shoutbox:

Tough call. I'm gonna say a good 6 months after it's available on DVD, generally.

However, I think there's some wiggle room if a) it was widely seen and/or b) the movie's impact and enjoyability doesn't particularly hinge on the ending. I think Eva Green in Casino Royale is pretty borderline on the second point.

You mean when she gets trapped in that glass elevator deathtrap and drowns horribly in the dark, frigid depths below while Daniel Craig's Bond desperately tries to free her by pounding on the walls of her sinking, transparent coffin?

Oh darn. I was hoping we were going to discuss this ending. Instead, this thread is about spoilers.

I think the ending is incredible and why Bond became the Bond we all knew.

I was thinking of the part before where Bond wins the poker tournament with a straight flush and is tortured by Tyler Durden, who is actually Keyser Soze, who is Bond's father, who was actually dead all along.

Excuse me! Spoiler tags, please!

I don't think that there should be a cut off date. What about people who are new to movie viewing? Why should the movie get ruined for them, simply because they didn't get into movies until later on in their lives? Then there are young people, like Lennon, The Spirit . . . Just how many movies should these kids have viewed by now!?!
I think that out of respect, people should do what they can to keep important parts of the movie, especially the ending, from being ruined.

I think that, on the internet, you proceed at your own risk and you just have to assume every ending to every film is just one click away.
I don't see why anyone should have to expect this. For the most part, I don't even think this is a huge issue on this board. I would hate for that to change.

As I said about your post in the shout-box. There was enough of a warning on that one, in my opinion, to stop reading in time. That's not always the case, though.

Reminds me of a cartoon some time back that shows people standing in line to get tickets to Titanic and this middle-age guy is telling his wife, "I hear the special effects of the sinking of the ship are outstanding." And a teenager standing behind them says, "The ship sinks??? Well, thanks for spoiling it for me!!!"

From what I've seen of some of the mall rats for whom movies are now made, they would have no clue as to what was going to happen to Custer in They Died with Their Boots On, or whether Earhart completes her flight. I suspect some went to see Pearl Harbor wondering which actress was going to play Pearl.

THIS thread is from a couple years ago, but still relevant and exactly on topic.

Enjoy!

I find it very ironic that you can be so tyrannical in your abuse of moderating power when just yesterday you wrote up a ten paragraph treatise condemning such dictatorial behavior. For shame, Sedai. For shame.

Well if we're all regurgitating our shouts, I'll just say...

Scurrilous knave!

Hello Salem, my name's Winifred. What's yours
its a tough call really, even thought there are films i havent seen that have been out for years and years i still might not know the ending. I had a lecturer last year who loved to show clips i the lecture, mostly of films i hadnt seen yet. He spoiled the ending of a few films I had really wanted to see.

The big ones im not too worried about, you cant spoil star wars for anyone, a good portion of people know who Kaiser Soze is, and Citizen Kane is legend.

But I do hate to break it to people....ET never phoned home

If it's a well-known film which has been out for a while and you still ain't seen it, then: tough.

The problem comes when defining 'well known' and 'a while' so I do what most sensible people do here - find a way to write about something without mentioning vital plot twists if you possibly can.

As extra insurance I tend avoid review posts about films that I've not seen (until I've watched them, natch) and want to.

Movie Club, of course, is a place where we can (and frequently do) discuss great big whoppers of spoilers with naked abandon. Get them all of your chest in Movie Club!

Geez, I miss being a salesman...

Hahaha.

That scene was incredibly sad.
