Star Wars: Rogue One (the first Star Wars Spin-off)

The first Spin-Off movie of Star Wars we've all been hearing about will be named "Rogue One".


Felicity Jones (The Theory Of Everything as Stephen Hawking's wife) to star, directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters and the recent Godzilla movie) and written by the recent Disney Cinderella live-action film screenwriter Chris Weitz.

According to StarWars.com, the site describes it as “the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga.” Rumors have indicated that it could involve a group of bounty hunters who are involved in a heist of some kind -- possibly to steal the plans to the Death Star.

“The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic,” reports the site.

“He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.'

The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

A Star Wars movie every year seems like overkill to me. I just hope Disney adapts Drew Karpyshyn's excellent Darth Bane trilogy before the brand name is runs out of steam.

Based on the title it's probably related to Boba or Jango Fett - Boba Fett's ship in the original trilogy was "Slave One".

Since they're rebooting it and ignoring the expanded universe this probably won't happen unfortunately.

There's also Rogue Group and Rogue Squadron from the original trilogy. It could be about pilots...

Monkey feathers. I knew they were scrapping at least some of the EU books but I was hoping they were keeping the stuff set before Return of the Jedi.

It's been officially officialised a few moments ago that Rogue One will take place before the original trilogy.

Isaac is in the new trilogy... this is taking place before A New Hope.

Why?

Oh please, the Expanded Universe has existed for years already, converting that sort of stuff to movies is hardly killing it. Not to mention, they'll never be as bad as that abominable Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie.

The expanded universe has been binned, it's no longer canon. They aren't using any of it any more.


The new trilogy is a totally new story.

The Phantom Menace fits that bill better if anything, Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith were good movies. Though none of them (even Phantom Menace) ever got heavily slammed by critics anyway - most of the harsh criticism I've seen boils down to nitpicking, and most of the actual plot holes can easily be explained away by "the force" anyway, as much of a deus ex machina that is, it still works in the movies given how the force is shown to work.

So gramp does not have a point? Besides there is all sorts oif canon stuff coming out.

I didn't say he didn't have a point. I agree that the expanded universe didn't kill the franchise.
