Shawn Levy could wind up directing the next Avengers movie!

Director Shawn Levy may be sticking around the Marvel Cinematic Universe a bit longer.

Levy, who helmed this summer’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” is being eyed by Marvel — though it’s in very early stages — to direct the next “Avengers” movie.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who made 2021’s Marvel movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” was previously supposed to direct the fifth “Avengers” movie, but he backed out in November 2023. That movie, which is scheduled for May 1, 2026, also does not currently have a title. It was originally named “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” but lost that title after Jonathan Majors, who was cast as the time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror, was convicted of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend. After this untitled “Avengers” movie, the next will be “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for May 7, 2027.

Levy’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which brings together the iconic superheroes played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Fox’s X-Men universe, will hit theaters on July 26. It will be the first “Deadpool” movie released by Disney after it acquired 20th Century Fox, and it marks the first R-rated MCU movie. Not to mention, it’ll officially bring Fox’s mutants into the proper MCU timeline, which fans have been clamoring for since the acquisition.

Levy previously worked with Reynolds on the 2022 family adventure movie “The Adam Project” (which included Marvel actors Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldaña) and 2021’s “Free Guy” (which had Easter eggs nodding to Captain America and Hulk). He’s also worked with Jackman on the 2011 action movie “Real Steel.”

More deets!!

Even with no director set and the script only recently coming in, Marvel has been working hard in recent months to pull this together so shooting can begin next year on one of Marvel’s largest productions to date. Sources close to the project say more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillian. Unlike the first four films in which there was a core group that consisted of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team.

In a twist worthy of a Marvel movie, the Russo brothers may be coming back to make more Marvel movies

Please Lord, let it end. Each new "phase" feels like a new stage of cancer.

You know you don't have to watch something that doesn't float your boat, right?

And you don't have to shop Starbucks or Walmart, but damn if there isn't one on every corner and in every town.

And you don't have to shop Starbucks or Walmart, but damn if there isn't one on every corner and in every town.
I am very disappointed in you, Corax.

You could maybe have come up with a better analogy.

Whereas a Starbucks or a Walmart have a permanent presence (occasionally a few of their stores might close, but that doesn't happen too frequently), any movie franchise represents at most only a small fraction of the hundreds of movies that play in theaters every year.

So, at any given time, there's over a dozen movies playing in theaters, not to mention the hundreds of options available for home viewing, so that there's always something for everyone.

If you don't want to watch a particular movie, you can buy a ticket for something else, or change the channel. So it isn't really a major inconvenience, imho.

But even more importantly, as much as some movie fans may hate to admit it, it's been the superhero genre that's mostly responsible for keeping movie theaters open during the last few years, and with those theaters come thousands of jobs.

We need movie theaters to stay open and for their employees to stay employed. With the theaters open, all kinds of different movies can be shown - even the ones that won't make a lot of money, but at least they're there for those who want to see them on the big screen.

I'm "whelmed."

How much is spent making and promoting these films? How much time do we spend with video-game tie-ins, late night interviews where our heroes like about their "natty" exercise routine to get to the size of of a body builder, how much water is displaced by these big fish?

Also, you might follow your own advice. I don't have to pay attention to films I don't like; you don't have to pay attention to opinions you don't like. It seems, however, that we both have something so say...

Ah yes, those essential workers selling popcorn at 1,000% mark up and mumbling to us where our screen is.

I would be happy to see theaters close. Hollywood's collapse would create a space for young minds, fresh ideas, new media. I smile when I hear about ratings for the Oscars tanking.

I'll tell Greta to put it on the list.

Have you ever heard of Hollywood accounting?

The MCU has never been a favorite series of films for me. But when I committed to actually dive into and understand the universe I mostly very much enjoyed the Infinity Saga.

But after Endgame, I have had less and less interest in the MCU and they’ve shot in so many directions and made so many movies and tv shows - most of which has been no good - that I don’t care anymore.

When Infinity War came, it was a build up we all had been waiting for and something that felt planned and calculated well. This time, they have yet so really nail the direction they want to go, so when this movie finally comes out, I find it hard to see it have near the same weight or impact.

The desperate rumors going around on how they want to bring back Iron Man and Captain America and the Russos as well as countless cameos just seems like last minute desperate attempts to save a sinking ship. It’s a shame.

I don't really agree with that at all, some of the best and most interesting directors who have worked on the series have been the ones who came aboard after Endgame.

Doesn’t automatically mean better films. Eternals was pretty much the worst received MCU movie despite a great director.

And it definitely doesn’t automatically mean better coherency and direction, which is my main problem with the MCU right now.

I fail to see how a movie series based on comic books is supposed to have a "direction", frankly.

Everything in the series is inspired by the comics.... there are many stand-alone stories and there are some cross-overs. Not everything has to lead to a cross-over, but it's kind of neat when something does. And yes, just like in the comics, sometimes you have to wait for years or even decades to see how some things may connect.

The series is absolutely coherent in its own way - in that it borrows liberally from the comics that inspire it, but it is also not afraid to make things more cinematic when it is possible.

As for Chloé Zhao - I love absolutely each and every one of her films. I look forward to her next project very much.

The trick is not minding
Even the comic books had a direction it followed, I.E. a storyline or plot arc they often followed. It would make sense for the movies to do the same, but it hasn’t quite pulled it together since pre Endgame.

Then you fail to see the MCU as it is now and has been for several years.

In my opinion, I couldn’t care less for what road they choose. Connected or otherwise. But alas, the MCU have chosen to make the universe connected. They have chosen to do cliffhangers and mid credits and after credits. They have chosen to set up many new characters and many new arcs and stories.

But they have also mostly failed to follow through on these factors in recent years.

Yes, because a comic book can run for years or decades, and a movie is 2 hours. Different medium requires different approach. Not everything is going to translate directly.

No, I just couldn't be happier that it is going exactly the way it is going. It's one of the few franchises that imho remains absolutely reliable.

Really? I had no idea they were such different mediums.
The point is, as a movie based off of a comic book, taking direct inspiration from said comic book, the movie should have some better direction. Right now, they’re leading towards the exploration of the multiverse, but they haven’t tied them together in a satisfying way

Why are you being sarcastic now? I was just explaining why something makes total sense to me, it wasn't being snarky or anything.

The point is, as a movie based off of a comic book, taking direct inspiration from said comic book, the movie should have some better direction.
The inspiration isn't really completely direct, they have to make some changes from the source material.

Right now, they’re leading towards the exploration of the multiverse, but they haven’t tied them together in a satisfying way
It seems satisfying to me... Honestly, considering all the turmoil the industry has endured in the last 4 years, I think they're doing a terrific job. Had it not been for the pandemic and last year's strikes, a lot of projects wouldn't have had to get delayed and the next Avengers movie would be coming out next year. As it is, we're lucky if it is released by 2027. These last few years have been hard for everyone in the industry, but particularly for the people lower down in the industry.

I think we can give them a break - or at least I know I am.

According to industry journals, the next Avengers movie (aka Doomsday) will feature, among others, Ms Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight
