The list itself was very good. A lot of interesting choices, and you write really well. Even if I don't agree with a choice, you show me how you came to that conclusion. This was fun to read and you did a great job. Obviously Psycho and The Shining are so beloved for a reason, and they're at the top of so many lists similar to these for a reason, but I was hoping I'd see something really outside of the box, something that I'd never heard of so i could watch it and say "damn, that was a great one!" Good for you for making your own feelings known. It's what I said yesterday: The important thing is how you say something, not what you say. I'm not going to qualify every word I say with "Personally, in my opinion, this isn't objective, but for me I think that..." It would be boring to read. Those things are all true about every statement I make, but why be so passive as to say that? There's no right way to do this, but I have some beliefs that are different than yours, ultimately leading me to the conclusion that I should probably be sharing these opinions in my own horror list. I don't need to be here for a long time to know a lot about film. If you're honest and intelligent, both of which you seem to be, then you made the best list that anybody could. Your a better writer than me, and that will make you better this, regardless of what the number is next to the thing you're writing about. I'd like to think that you're not really emotionally invested in a forum, but if you are then this isn't a place to get angry. I'm not trying to offend anybody, just making the statement that I think different things about film then you. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with either of us.

don't sweat it MovieMed, just a couple pages ago i said i was dazed seeing some classics ranked below some newer horror entries, and now someone's calling your list predictable. That's pretty annoying and i see exactly where you're coming from bro, fun thread with well-done presentation

That doesn't mean you can't be honest though, but I would've liked it to be said to me in a more calm and natural manner, like "I feel like these last movies are a little predictable, but I liked the write-ups and such. Anyways could you tell me why you didn't pick something more daring or different for your top picks?" or something like that. Then we have a little discussion going on, where I can actually respond and answer your questions on why I chose what I did.
But thank you for the comments about my effort in here, and I'm glad it was just some kind of "misconnection", which got us out on the wrong track. But yeah, as nostromo said, because he pointed out earlier in the thread that those classics where too low, it is the icing on the cake when someone comes in and comments on how it is predictable and basically says the exact opposite. Then I'm totally confused and torn here.
I will look forward to a future list from you.

Sounds cool. I am an overwhelmingly sarcastic person. Girls tell me it makes me a boring texter, but I'm a fun guy. Just doesn't translate to writing too well. This weekend I will probably make my own list.

Spoiler: Janet Leigh dies real fast
A great film, but still not something I think of as a horror film.
Congrats on finishing your list, MM.

I haven't seen The Orphanage, but Alien, Rosemary, Psycho, and The Shining are all great classics. It took you forever, but I very much enjoyed this list.

Congratulations on finishing your list, MM! I hate that I wasn't around much while this was going on so I couldn't properly comment on each entry, but I enjoyed reading through it nonetheless. I love your commitment to doing the best job possible. The write-ups are stellar. The presentation looks great. Too bad about the films.
It's safe to say that you and I have very different taste in horror. I'm not surprised to see that you've already declared certain films "too high" or "unqualified." I imagine a few more would suffer the same unfavorable reanalysis if you re-watched them today. There's a heavy focus on recent horror films. I generally think that modern horror is a wasteland with just a few gems here and there. You have to go back a few decades to find the good stuff. I also prefer horror that's more visceral and in your face rather than horror that hides in the shadows and goes bump in the night, so your favoritism toward the supernatural is pretty much the opposite of my own sensibilities. As you said, though, this is your favorites list, so I love that you gave us a very personal and unpredictable list instead of recycling the same old, same old. However, that doesn't stop me from giving you the stink eye when I see movies like Insidious, The Conjuring and 1408 so high on the list. Clearly nostalgia played an important role in the shaping of this list. You're a few years younger than me, so I was old enough to see that some of these films are crap. No offense.
There's still a lot of good to be gleaned from the list. The bottom of the list features some excellent films that I imagine will climb higher once you've seen them a few more times -- Nosferatu the Vampyre, in particular. As much as I may decry modern supernatural horror, The Others and The Orphanage are both excellent films. They're both spooky and atmospheric and creepy without falling victim to an over reliance on cheap jump scares or the tendency to reveal too much to the audience. Poltergeist holds a lot of nostalgia for me. Psycho, Rosemary's Baby, Alien and The Shining are some of my favorite films, regardless of genre. The Fly, The Thing, The Descent and Let the Right One In are all great films. I haven't seen Oculus, New Nightmare, Ginger Snaps, Jacob's Ladder or The Devil's Backbone, so I can't judge you there. Even though I was quite fond of the torture porn phase that became so popular in the mid-2000's, I never cared for the Saw series. The first one was okay, but I think I bailed on the series after the third or fourth movie.
Maybe in a couple of years you can give us a revised edition where we'll have a little more in common, but if not, that's okay. I love that you take the time to explain why you love these films, which is what makes these lists worthwhile. Without the explanations, it's a boring, meaningless collection of films. Your knack for going the extra mile makes me excited for any potential lists in your future, whether it's another genre specific list or a top 100.
Keep being awesome!

Thanks a million, as always, Spaulding. Can't believe you already caught up with all my threads now. Not only repping them, but reading them and commenting on them. You are almost the perfect definition of a forum member. No one appreciate the work of others like you do. No one wants to discuss and participate in debates, lists, reviews etc. all over the forum, as much as you do... I don't have to tell you to keep being aweosome.
But yeah, I'm sad we are so different in horror. Many picks definitely holds nostalgia and fun memories from my childhood, but I don't think I will ever change that I love supernatural horror. I, to some extent, believe in the mysteries of our world, which makes such stories more real and intense for me. I love ghost stories because they are the only ones that can really get me some times. Or just make me have a fun creepy time!
I will actually do a revised listing very soon already, but of course that's not going to be the biggest of all in changes... I actually thought about going through my favorite horrors ALL THE WAY from 50-1, so that I could rank them all definitively afterwards and make a true-to-my-current-taste list. But I don't know. It would take time too... I'll probably wait and make a total revised list in a few short years or something.
THANKS again Spaulding, love your comments, they help me keep going. This list was hard on me. I aimed way too high, again, and those write-ups and finding picures and fixing layouts for each entry took forever and I sat all day many times. I wil always aim to do things perfectly, but I think this is the last you will see of review-length write-ups for each entry on a list. I will not abondon write-ups completely, because as you said, a list without them is nothing. But I think I'll stick to one paragraph or something.

Nice list MM, some of them I dont always agree with but classic Horror like "Psycho" cant be beat... I enjoyed "The Shining" its one of the better horror films from that decade so I will give you that. Even tho I was a teen in the 80's, some of their films I cant stand to watch... but "The Shining" still has the 70's feel to it..

Really though, I most certainly appreciate that comment! It was a lot of hard work, so I'm glad to hear such amazing things like that. It really makes it more than worth it! Thank you for following my list all the way to the end, and I'm so glad that you enjoyed it so much.

Bloody loved it MM! Brilliant list, I'm sorry it took me so long though
I doubt I'll have remembered everything but:
WHERE IS ARGENTO?!?!
I also thought Saw 3 was the best one out of the franchise! With 2 not far behind, wasn't that big a fan of the first one really. But, as fascinating as John is, I loved the character of Amanda Young, I loved how she slowly became more prominent and significant throughout the series, and Shawnee Smith delivered an amazing performance in the third film. However, I can't agree with the other films, I really believe they should have just stopped after 3, it was a perfect ending with a couple of tiny strings left untouched, but that was better for me than 4, 5 and 7
I largely agree with your film choices though, but I'd re-order a couple (i.e. putting Let the Right One In within the top 3 ) and I have yet to see The Shining I've heard very mixed things about it, so I'll have to find out for myself! But then film is very subjective, and you justified all of your choices amazingly well, I've never seen such devotion and dedication! I think this'll get a best thread nom from me
Keep more lists like these coming though!
