My Favorite LBGT Movie Characters

Tools

I have to say it kinda bothers me that effeminate gays in movies seems to bother you. Effeminate gays exist in the world and should not always be looked down upon as "stereotypes" when they're portrayed in films. Like the argument I had awhile back with Captain Spaulding about Meshach Taylor in Mannequin -- there's nothing wrong with his over-the-top, effeminate, "screaming queen" kind of character.
I am not bothered by effeminate gay characters...the list has just started, don't start assuming things so quickly.

65.

Agador, The Birdcage

Hank Azaria stole every scene he was in as the housekeeper of the Goldman household who was not feeling the masquerade being perpetrated to fool the Senator and his wife (Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest).

64.

Christy Cummings, Best in Show

Jane Lynch was very funny as the trainer of Rhapsody in Blue, the poodle who has won the show the last three years, who is having an affair with the dog's owner (Jennifer Coolidge).

63.

Emory, Boys in the Band

Here you go, Sexy...possibly the gayest of all movie characters, Cliff Gorman nails the outrageously openly gay friend of Michael (Kenneth Nelson) who finds it pretty impossible to act straight when Michael announces that his straight friend Alan (Peter White) is about invade the party. As outrageous as this character might be, Gorman keeps the character steeped in realism and doesn't make a false move in the performance, especially during the telephone game.

62.

Toby, Transamerica

Kevin Zegers was a perfect combination of sexy and dangerous as a bisexual hustler who has used his body to earn his keep for most of his life who finds himself on a road trip with his biological father (Felicity Huffman) even though he doesn't know it.

61.

John, Johns

David Arquette had the role of his career as an LA street hustler who wants to spend his 21st birthday in a fancy hotel. John claims to be straight and only sleeps with men for money, but I think John has feelings about his best friend Donner (Lukas Haas) that he's in denial about as well as a regular customer (Elliott Gould). It's never really made clear whether John is straight or gay and that's what makes the character so interesting...if anything, the character is definitely bisexual.

60.

Chi-Chi, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar

John Leguizamo knocks it out of the park as a very insecure drag queen who goes on a road trip with two other drag queens (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes) and really discovers his inner drag...Leguizamo gets my vote for the most attractive male actor in drag ever.

59.

Roger DeBris, The Producers (2005)

Gary Beach reprises his Broadway role in the 2005 film version of the Mel Brooks musical playing the very gay theater director whom Bialystock and Bloom (Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick) want to direct their production of "Springtime for Hitler" so it will be a bomb.

This is my dead homeless boyfriend (yes, dead, sorry for spoiling) that lives in a '90s gay indie movie.

58.

Harold, Boys in the Band

Harold's birthday party is the setting for this groundbreaking film...Leonard Frey plays this aging queen who is down about his looks and his age, but has a razor sharp wit and is the only one who plays Michael's games better than Michael does. This performance is incredible, I can't believe this is the same actor who played Motel the Tailor in the film version of Fiddler on the Roof.

57.

Nick Stark, It's My Party

Eric Roberts plays an architect who is dying of an AIDS-related illness and has decided to end his life on his own terms and throw a big party to say goodbye to his friends and family before he does it.

56.

Brian Roberts, Cabaret

Michael York plays the sexually inexperienced writer who is content in his affair with Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) until a German millionaire named Maximillian (Helmut Griem) brings out the bisexual in him.

Toby, Transamerica

This looks really familiar...

*looks up*

Oh hey, I saw this.

Been hearing about this one recently. Queued up.

"Well, at least your intentions behind the UTTERLY DEVASTATING FAULTS IN YOUR LOGIC are good." - Captain Steel

Last year, I watched about 1/3 or maybe 1/2 of this movie on TV. It wasn't bad. BUT -- I paused the movie to go do something and when I saw that there was like another hour and a half left or something like that, I just could not keep watching it. Way too long for a movie, I felt. The man's dying of AIDS -- I get it. Nice movie, what I could stand to watch of it.

Technically, the character wasn't dying of AIDS...he was dying of an AIDS-related disease that was going to turn him into a vegetable. He did not want to live that way so he decided to end his life before the disease ravaged his body.

55.

Buzz Hausner, Love! Valour! Compassion!

Jason Alexander was cast against type as a gay man dying of AIDS but trying to pretend it's not happening. I love this character because he's constantly quoting Broadway musicals. The first time we lay eyes on the character, he is on a bus, wearing headphones, and singing "Willkommen" from Cabaret at the top of his lungs.

54.

Nic, The Kids are Allright

Annette Bening was nominated for an Oscar for her peformance as Nic. Nic is a lesbian doctor in a committed relationship with Jules (Julianne Moore) whose life is turned upside down when the sperm donor for their children (Mark Ruffalo) comes into their lives. I love Nic and Jules because they aren't what you think of when you think of lesbians...they are soccer mom-types raising a son and daughter who come home every night and have dinner together and then go up to their bedroom and watch gay male porn while having sex.

53.

Scotty J., Boogie Nights

Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives a heartbreaking performance as an overweight and insecure grip/crew member who works for Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) and has a mad crush on Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg). This character is sad and slightly pathetic because he really wants to be an insider in the porn industry and he never will be.

52.

Maureen Johnson, Rent

Idina Menzel plays the sexually uninhibited performance artist who doesn't let the fact that her ex-boyfriend, Mark (Anthony Rapp) is still hung up on her interfere with her relationship with her new girlfriend, Joanne (Tracie Thomas).
