I have run out of films

Tools

How many of them have you seen?
I'm not 100% certain since I don't keep track, but I'm pretty sure I either haven't seen most of them, or haven't seen them in so long, I've forgotten all about them.

With time, I’ve come to realize that it’s extremely important for me as a cinephile to not only watch the best of the best.

At one point, I had a month or so where I watched and rewatched a lot of “big” or “critically acclaimed” films in a row. And seeing so many greats ended up clouding my vision and also not appreciating one great from the next.

Once I went back to just watch some random stuff and instead expand my horizon and try different stuff, it was so much better coming back to the big movies again.*

Everything worked out for the better and I realized it is a necessity to sort of mix it up once in a while. For your own sake but also because the great films might simply not be great because you are fatigued/clouded or whatever. That’s what I realized at least.

My daughter would call you a movie snob because your are only watching what you consider great and not being open minded to other things.

Re-evaluating your own standards by watching other movies will eventually rewrite the movies you like now. I've seen 3000 movies and 463 of them are ranked five-stars. This is because every genre has a plethora of great movies.

I REALLY have to expand on this. Listening to bad albums by acts like Brokencyde and Attila ended up teaching me why albums like Kid A are so good. It means you have real low-grade stuff to compare the good stuff to.

Here are some films most people haven't heard of that are worth watching:

Wow, I've seen 0 from that list, and I actually haven't heard of most of them.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain
I'm going to take a different tack here. Are you working against some life factor you're not sharing. For example ... I'm 69, and I'm realizing that, not only will I never see all movies, I'll never even see all the movies that are still on my voluminous bucket list of flicks. I more than occasionally watch some mindless action movie or something not to my taste that my wife prefers. I've given up on the guilt. I've accepted that I won't attain that perfection of reaching the end of my list before I reach my end, and it's more important to enjoy in the moment than chase a goal that was always going to elude me, whether at 29 or 69.

Regardless of your reasons, I applaud your dedication to quality. I think the others are trying to give you sound advice, but perhaps also the advice that would fit best with their outlook on things rather than yours.

So now I backtrack a bit with a minor suggestion: Like someone trying to adhere to a strict diet, maybe allow yourself a cheat day now and then.

My daughter would call you a movie snob because your are only watching what you consider great and not being open minded to other things.

You don't watch anything modern. Again, you would be considered a snob.

Trouble with a capital "T"
Robert can I ask you what your goal is in making this thread? That's not a complaint. I enjoy reading your threads and interacting with you...I honestly don't know what exactly you are asking for?

this happens to me at times as i don't tend to watch movies rated below 5.5 and i have cut down the number of genres i watch. i tend to look back to older films or foreign made movies i haven't see. some of the movies i watched recently for the first time:

woman in the dunes
the face of another
modern times
the grand illusion

The Guy Who Sees Movies
Go take a walk in the woods, sit on the beach for a couple days, start a stamp collection or build a birdhouse. Too many movies exhausts your brain. If you can't find anything that seems new or interesting, that's because of "too many movies".

When you say "again", on your last test actually I wasn't a snob.

I don't need to see your list. No sense in posting it to me. We have completely different taste and I'm open to watching things outside my top 100.

I enjoy interacting with you too.

I have enjoyed the thread, I think it's brought out several really interesting observations.

It was literally just a moment I had (and really it's more than a moment, but it was a moment where I was aware of it), where I thought, there's not really any more movies that I want to watch.

Literally that. And just felt like sharing that thought. 100% it wasn't an attempt at a boast or anything like that, just kind of saying I'm bored and don't know what to do next (which kind of sums my life up albeit in a far far far far less dramatic and depressing way!).

I don't actually wear pants.
I heard of someone who only watched films on the IMDb Top 250 because he didn't have time for mediocrity. He had time to post online all day but he didn't have time to watch a film with a 7.7 on IMDb. It made no sense. I guess he can do that, except it really limits what one sees, and it's a rather pointless limitation. Just watch anything. Some movies are fluffy and that's okay. We don't need deep artsy fartsy films every time we watch something. I asked him what happens if he dislikes a movie from the Top 250, and he said that never happens because it obviously can't since it's obviously great. I had no friendly response.
