Dancer in the Dark, Melancholia, Breaking the Waves...

wait, uh, Lars von Trier movies in general. Anyways look at that thread linked by Iro, we had plenty of discussion in that one!

Von Trier's Epidemic has a depressing ending. Or at least disturbing.

The laugh scene is hilarious, though.

Definitely, Locke but I love it.

Even Dogville had a bummer ending.

Dancer in the Dark makes me sad because the thought of Bjork dying makes me think of no more Bjork music.

a real propaganda film... you should watch it... directed by Fritz Hippler.
I will look for it. Holocaust movies are depressing, but I watch them because I think it's important to never forget. (I'd like to see Escape from Sobibor again, starring Alan Arkin.)

Have you seen "Night and Fog" and "An Film Unfinished"? These are more documentary type and if you want to watch the full 550 minutes of "Shoah" you can. I have only seen part of that.. Its the Criterion copy.

I saw Night and Fog a long time ago (I think they may have even showed it in my high school, back in the early 80's). But I'll put the others on my list too.

Welcome to the human race...
Depressing, not pretentious.
People are name-dropping Lars von Trier and you're going to single out my answer as pretentious?

That's without getting into the issue with calling films pretentious...
