Tropic Thunder is . . . fine.

Like, it's an okay comedy. I enjoyed it in the theater when it came out. It would never occur to me to put it on a list of war movies (regardless of IMDb classification).

When some of the movies I love don't make the list, this will be one I'm a little salty about, LOL.

The trick is not minding
Is it necessary for us to keep dwelling on the genre restriction rule? I feel like everyone has already voiced their opinion on it, so I don't see a point to further harp on it. Keyser already said a couple days ago that he thought of an alternate solution to the rule after the countdown started, so I think he's acknowledged our opinions. Personally, I don't see much value in further complaining about it since it feels like we're starting to repeat ourselves at this point, so it might be best to move on.
Fine.
*grumble grumble*

Tropic Thunder is the second title thus far to have appeared on a previous MoFo List. It was #59 on the MoFo Top 100 Comedies.

I might agree if Robert Downey, Jr. wasn't there giving one of the funniest performances of all time. I also think Matthew McConaughey's contribution to this movie is underrated.
My stepdad is fond of Tom Cruise's performance.

HINTS:

84:

Guy 1: “(insert title here).”
Guy 2: “Big whoop. This happens in EVERY movie of this genre.”

85:
Again? It was hard enough seeing this happen once.

I forgot the opening line.
The unexpectedness continues - 16 films in and so far none of mine have made a showing. I'm confident though, that most will show. I usually am, until near the end of the countdown where I go through a period of shock that not every single person has the same taste as me.

86. Mrs. Miniver - Definitely heard of this, but had no idea what it was about. I haven't seen any William Wyler films pre-Roman Holiday, except perhaps Wuthering Heights. Might have to seek this one out.

85. Tropic Thunder - This seems to be a really well-regarded comedy seeing as it's appeared on Mofo countdowns twice already. I thought it was okay - I've got the 2-disc Director's Cut edition on DVD, but it doesn't fit into my absolute upper tier of comedies. It's good though. I'll watch it again if given enough of a nudge. It doesn't immediately spring to mind when speaking of 'war movies' mostly because it's a movie about making movies first and foremost - although there is action towards the end, and the characters are making a war film. Great Tom Cruise cameo (much more than a cameo - I don't know why I always call his role one), and a whole host of performers - when Ben Stiller is really on (he'll show up in a film such as Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and steal the show) he's a whole lot of fun to watch. He's directed a number of hugely successful films as well, so no surprise he had such a sure hand and great comedic instinct making Tropic Thunder.

Seen : 8/16
Heard of : 11/16
Haven't heard of : 5/16

Welcome to the human race...
No votes. I've seen Mrs. Miniver once and liked it. Tropic Thunder seems like my kind of thing and I enjoyed it enough at first but watching an extended edition DVD undercut things and I've never felt like revisiting it in any form.

Mrs. Miniver is a classic film I've meant to watch for the longest time but I never seem to catch it when it airs on TCM. Have only heard great things about it so I look forward to that one day or night when I catch it.

Now Tropic Thunder is a pick I can get behind. I didn't consider it for the list but I think it's hilarious. Before I'd ever seen it I bought it fairly cheap at a video store and got the Director's Cut. I don't know what the differences are between it and the theatrical version and I don't care because now that I've watched it, this can be the only version I see, so funny it is. Everyone is terrific in it and I love that it especially skewers that um, certain city that turns out movies that we were taking about earlier. You know.

Nada from my list.

One of the most mentioned films on MoFo that I haven't seen yet is Mrs. Miniver so I'll get to it soon, I promise.

The reason Tropic Thunder gets so much hate is because I think there are still many 'Flaming Dragon' sympathizers active here on MoFo since the Comedy countdown.
I have it at #98.

My War Top 100:

88. Enemy at the Gates (2001, Jean-Jacques Annuad)
Terrible film in my opinion. Cockney Russian accents, terrible acting and a woeful script.

87. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987, Barry Levinson)
I like this one. Quite emotional. I'm due a rewatch. Didn't make my list

86. Mrs. Miniver (1942, William Wyler)
Not seen this one

85. Tropic Thunder (2008, Ben Stiller)
One of the worst, most painfully unfunny films I have ever seen.

For the latest tranche of films (#85-92), none of these were on my list. I've seen Hotel Rwanda (decent) and I'm fairly sure I saw Good Morning, Vietnam! way back when (Robin Williams, RIP, is not my guy). The rest I haven't seen. I regret nothing.

Early posting. In the middle of a movie with someone.

HINTS BREAKDOWN:

84: The "insert title here" was supposed to be a complete sentence, as hinted by the conversation format.

83: The idea was that this was a remake of a movie that was already hard enough to watch for its depressing content.

I haven't seen either of these. I have seen the original Grave of the Fireflies though and most definitely will not be watching the remake. One time of sitting through that extremely depressing story was enough.
