My 100 Worst Movie Performances

Tools

26.

Mark Wahlberg as Chris

Rock Star (2001)

Though he looked great in tight leather pants, it wasn't enough to make his performance as a copier repair guy who actually becomes the lead singer for his favorite band work.

25.

Russell Brand as Arthur Bach

Arthur (2011)

Brand casting himself in this 2011 remake of the 1981 classic seemed like a good idea on paper, but the performance gets annoying really quickly because Brand fails to capture the intelligence of the character. If you look at the original film, Dudley Moore's Arthur was a drunk, but he was not an idiot, but this Arthur is.

Paint your Wagon is a lame musical. Clint's singing voice isn't good but it isn't terrible like most make it out to be. Bigger problems for me include the pompous plot and the soundtrack consisting of mostly mediocre songs.

24.

Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian

Rock of Ages (2012)

After a couple of seasons as a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, Julianne Hough got a little full of herself and decided she wanted a career as an actress and recording artist. Somehow she got the chance to prove herself as the lead in this 2012 version of the Broadway musical built around classic rock songs. A year after this film was released, Hough returned to Dancing with the Stars but as a judge, so what does that tell you?

42.

Steve Carell as Barry

Dinner for Schmucks (2010)

The usually reliable Carell really missed the boat playing a nerd who likes to do mouse taxidermy who unintentionally destroys the life of his alleged new BFF (Paul Rudd). I don't know why Carell (or Rudd for that matter) would even agree to do this piece of crap? Did they actually bother to read the script before accepting the roles or did they just need the money?
Ok, all caught up with this thread now!

I was incredibly disappointed with Dinner for Schmucks as well because I love Steve Carell and liked the original film adaptation. My pen pal from France came to visit and I asked her to pick out some French films for me to watch. The Dinner Game was one of them and unlike the American remake, it was funny.

Maybe give that one a try?

I'm checking back for another Valley of the Dolls appearance!

Rock of Ages is a VERY guilty pleasure for me. I thought she was okay. Then again no one walked away from this movie with any real dignity except for Mary J. Bilge.

74.

Penelope Cruz as Mirtha Jung

Blow (2001)

Cruz is ridiculously over-the-top as the trophy wife of a drug dealer (Johnny Depp) who uses their child as a bargaining chip to get what she wants. Cruz has rarely been this unappealing and, like Robin Willams in Popeye, I could barely understand anything the actress said in this movie.
47.

Matthew McConaughey as Mark Hanna

The Wolf of Wall Street

Though the role was brief, McConaughey still managed to turn in a really annoying performance as Leonardo DiCaprio's first mentor in his career as a stock broker. God, he was obnoxious in this movie...the best thing about this performance was its brevity.

There will be one more.

23.

Marjorie Reynolds as Linda Mason

Holiday Inn (1942)

Reynolds was pretty, but her lack of acting experience and screen charisma made her performance as a show biz hopeful who comes between a song and dance team (Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire) the weakest part of the film. I've always felt that if someone like Kathryn Grayson, Judy Garland, or Cyd Charisse had been cast as Linda, this movie could have been something really amazing.

22.

Bill Pullman as President Thomas J. Whitmore

Independence Day (1996)

A hammy and unconvincing performance and my vote for worst performance by an actor playing the POTUS.

21.

Liza Minnelli as Linda Morolla

Arthur (1981)

I love this movie, but Minnelli is beyond annoying as the waitress/aspiring actress who drunken millionaire Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore) risks a 750 million inheritance in order to be with. I don't know, there was just something affected and forced about the performance and I kept wondering what Arthur sees in this girl.

22.

Bill Pullman as President Thomas J. Whitmore

Independence Day (1996)

A hammy and unconvincing performance and my vote for worst performance by an actor playing the POTUS.

can't believe you disrespected the Pull-man

20.

Diana Ross as Dorothy

The Wiz (1978)

Ross really stunk up the place in this urban re-working of The Wizard of Oz. In the original L. Frank Baum story, Dorothy is 10 years old, but in order to legitimize Ross' casting in this role, Dorothy becomes a 31 year old school teacher (though she looks at least a decade older than that). Not only is her performance bad, she doesn't even look good in this movie. She at least looked good in Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany.

22.

Bill Pullman as President Thomas J. Whitmore

Independence Day (1996)

A hammy and unconvincing performance and my vote for worst performance by an actor playing the POTUS.
Well Gideon is not wrong for while the movie is a sci fi classic i can think of 10 actors of that era who could have been a better idea as president.

I thought Pullman did fine in ID4.

Plus rep for Marky Mark in Rock Star. I haven't actually seen that movie, but he's among my least favorite actors. I hate even using the word "actor" to describe him.

Yes Pullman was good but there are some who could have done better. Roland has a knack for getting wooden dull actors for lead roles.
