The only place a woman can go to be alone
is the bathroom.
A woman would like to be wrapped in strong arms
when she cries, without having to explain,
or huddle on the couch wrapped in a blanket and a cat.
But all over America, women crouch instead
on a white, cold monument to wasting water.
We lean against a chilled tile wall,
stare at ourselves in an icy mirror,
flush the toilet to cover howls and curses,
brush our teeth twice to cover the taste of anger.
We lock the door, fill the tub with hot bubbles,
take a long time shaving our legs and armpits,
study the way waves break over bulging stomachs.
We scour the sink and rearrange the bottles under it,
refold towels, throw away old prescriptions,
count bandaids and bottles of suntan lotion.
We turn out the lights, stare into candle flames,
light incense, try to pretend we’ve taken our troubles
to a glowing temple, placed them in the lap
of a smiling golden Goddess.

Outside, men who wouldn't know what to do
if a woman curled up in bed and cried
can relax before bloodless images on TV
and think, "She's only in the bathroom
doing some woman's thing."
Behind a locked door, a woman
spins the empty toilet paper roll
like a Tibetan prayer wheel,
chanting "Help me, help me, help me."

Don’t say you didn’t see this coming, Jason.

Don’t say you didn’t realize this would be my reaction
and that you never intended for me to get all worked up,
because if that were true, then you are dumber
than Lenny from Mice and Men, blinder than Oedipus
and Tiresias put together and can feel less
than a Dalton Trumbo character.

You put the Dick in Dickens and the Boo in kowski
and are more Coward-ly then Noël.

But you don’t understand any of these references,
Do you, Jason? Because you ‘don’t read’.
You are a geology major and you once told me
That, ‘Scientists don’t read popular literature,
Cristin, we have more important things to do’.

Well, f*ck you.

Be glad you don’t read, Jason,
because maybe you won’t understand this
as I scream it to you on your front lawn,
on Christmas Day, brandishing three hypodermic needles,
a ginsu knife and a letter of permission
from Bret Easton Ellis.

Jason, you are more absurd than Ionesco.
You are more abstract than Joyce,
more inconsistent than Agatha Christie
and more Satanic than Rushdie’s verses.


I can’t believe I used to want to Sappho you, Jason.
I used to want to Pablo Neruda you,
to Anais Nin And Henry Miller you. I used to want
to be O for you, to blow for you in ways
that even Odysseus’ sails couldn’t handle.
But self-imposed illiteracy isn’t a turn-on.

You used to make fun of me being a writer,
saying ‘Scientists cure diseases,
what do writers do?’

But of course, you wouldn’t understand, Jason.
I mean, have you ever gotten an inner thirsting
for Zora Neale Hurston?
Or heard angels herald for you
to read F Scott Fitzgerald?
Have you ever had a beat attack for Jack Kerouac?
The only Morrison you know is Jim, and you think
you’re the noble one?

Go Plath yourself.

Your heart is so dark, that even Joseph Conrad
couldn’t see it, and it is so buried under bullsh*t
that even Poe’s cops couldn’t hear it.

Your mind is as empty as the libraries in Fahrenheit 451.
Your mind is as empty as Silas Marner’s coffers.
Your mind is as empty as Huckleberry Finn’s wallet.

And some people might say that this poem
is just a pretentious exercise
in seeing how many literary references
I can come up with.

And some people might complain that this poem is,
at its core, shallow, expressing the same emotion again,
and again, and again. (I mean, there are only so many times
you can articulate your contempt for Jason,
before people get bored.)

But you know what, Jason? Those people would be wrong.

Because this is not the poem I am writing to express
my hatred for you.

This poem is the poem I am writing because we aren’t speaking,
and it is making my heart hurt so bad, it is all I
can do just to get up off the floor sometimes.

And this is the poem I am writing instead of writing
the ‘I miss having breakfast with you’ poem, instead of
writing the ‘Let’s walk dogs in our old schoolyard
again’ poem.

Instead of the ‘How are you doing?’ poem, the ‘I miss you’ poem,
the ‘I wish I was making fun of how much you like Garth
Brooks while sitting in front of your parents’ house
in your jeep’ poem, instead of the ‘Holidays are coming around
and you know what that means: SUICIDE!’ poem.

I am writing this so that I can stop wanting to write
the ‘I could fall in love with you again so quickly
if only you would say one more word to me’ poem.

But I am tired of loving you, Jason
cause you don’t love me right.

And if some pretentious-ass poem can stop me
From thinking about the way your laugh sounds,
about the way your skin feels in the rain,
about how I would rather be miserable with you,
then happy with anyone else in the world.

If some pretentious-ass poem can do all that?
Then I am gone with the wind, I am on the road,
I have flown over the f*cking cuckoo’s nest,
I am gone, I am gone, I am gone.

I am.

Silly Eye-Color Generalizations

there are those boys
with earthly eyes,
their eyes are like the ground.
you walk and walk, kicking up dirt
but they don't make a sound.

and when they kiss you they sometimes leave them open,
just to make sure you don't drowned.
yeah, the sweetest eyes, the truest eyes are probably dark brown.

there are those boys with golden hazel eyes,
the color of weak tea.
they spend their nights howling at the moon,
to let go of the sea.

the scope of their depth is terrifying, thrilling;
you think you're finally free
when they capture you,
cause golden eyes are as sticky as honey from a bee,
i'm drowning.

but those with blue i shouldn't trust,
cause i myself have blue.
you fall for them so easy,
you think you see right through.
you take a leap, thinking blue water is deep
when suddenly it's just grey rain.
and puddles at your feet, they freeze to dirty ice
and then they somehow melt back to clear blue water once again,
confusing.

blue eyes, they change like the weather,
blue sea, blue sky, blue pain.
i wouldn't trust my own blue eyed reflection,
as far as i could throw that mirror (bom, bom bom).

but these are just silly eye colored generalizations,
you shouldn't believe a word i say.
cause when you're lying in your bed,
darkness 'round your head
your eyes might as well be polka dotted or plaid,
polka dotted or plaid.



Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.
When I was young,
I had no sense.
Cut my balls
On a barb wire fence
Down to the doctor
I did go.

I had to show.

On the saucer-zombie-battling gods day the floodgates broke
And each of us was engulfed by genies and sprites
Offering us wishes and wonders and eternities
And charm and cleverness and true brave hearts and pots of gold
While giants feefofummed across the land, and killer bees,
But you had no idea of any of this because

The Ragnarok and fairies day, the day the great winds came
And snows, and the cities turned to crystal, the day
All plants died, plastics dissolved, the day the

"My Ex-Husband Asks Me Who Reads My Rough Drafts"

No one, I say, over Thanksgiving dinner at the Fess, the rhinestone ear-
rings I bought to please my lover brushing my cheeks like cool, knowl-
edgeable fingers. Then I amend that to: Well, my writing group does, of course.
But mostly I read my own rough drafts now.
I don't know why he's asking or
what it matters, the two of us poised at opposite sides of the table,
polite and wary, but still family of a kind, thrown together this holiday
by circumstances too complicated to question.

Dinner arrives, with all the trimmings, and we talk of other things. His
job and mine. Econometric models for utility companies. The business
of selling books for a living. He wears the navy blue sweater with a
snowflake design that I helped him pick out at Brooks Brothers. I wear
a bargain, teal-green silk from Shopko that he's never seen, the weird
alchemy of divorce making strange what was once most familiar.

Pumpkin pie comes, followed by decaf--sweetened, with lots of extra
cream--and all the silly things we know about one another float,
unspoken, in the lamplight between us. We do not talk of the future.

But as he bends to sign his half of the check, I see again how he bent at
our kitchen table, going over my manuscripts, pencil in hand, teaching
himself about poetry because he loved me. And how it is for love's sake,
and because no one in our lives can ever really be replaced, that he asks
me this question I do not know how to answer, except with the words
of this poem, this rough draft I am still in the process of revising.

Ah sweet music.

Wild sounds in the night
Angel siren voices.
The baying of great hounds.
Cars screaming thru gears
& shrieks
on the wild road
Where the tires skip & slide
into dangerous curves.

Favorite corners.
Cheerleaders raped in summer
buildings.
Holding hands
& bopping toward Sunday.

Those lean sweet desperate hours.

Time searched the hallways
for a mind.
Hands kept time.
The climate altered like a
visible dance.

Night-time women.
Wondrous sacraments of doubt
Sprang sullen in bursts
of fear & guilt
in the womb's pit hole

"An Exercise in Caution"

Trevor Alastair Howard MacTrunt
had a father who loved to hunt.
Many a head of stuffed zebra and grouse
lined the walls of their stately house.

One weekend in the month of May
while his parents went on holiday,
his nanny left him all alone
after an urgent call on the phone.

Trevor wandered the many rooms
which - while empty - were silent as tombs.
He searched on shelves and in closets to see
if he could find something to ward off ennui.

Suddenly the young MacTrunt discovered
some interesting objects in a cupboard:
kept behind an unlocked latch
was his father’s hunting gun stash.

Trevor’s eyes widened as he perched on a chair;
target practice sure beat out solitaire!
He reached inside and his fingers clutched
the first shotgun that they touched.

Common sense was lost to his joyous glee.
He’d never fired a gun, but how hard could it be?
After he put on his coat and boots
he took the gun outside to shoot.

But one thing Trevor did not know
is that he was not alone out there in the snow.
His father’s gamekeeper Mr. Artimage
had forgotten to secure the lioness’s cage.

I have told you, dear reader, that Mr. MacTrunt
was terribly fond of a challenging hunt.
I neglected to mention - and am dreadfully sorry -
that Mr. MacTrunt sometimes bought his own quarry.

The lioness had been pacing for a fortnight or so;
her paws were unfamiliar with the fallen snow.
That morning, Mr. Artimage made the horrible mistake
of not shutting the gate after feeding her several steaks.

So here’s the situation in which we find Trevor:
He can’t shoot a gun, and the escaped cat is clever.
When his nanny returns, all she will find
are a Winchester rifle and two boots - feet still confined.

Some parting words of advice for you youngsters:
you should be cautious of more than just monsters.
And parents, some words of advice for you:
lock up your guns - and your children, too.



Acquainted with the Night
