Director Arthur Penn is dead, the day after his eighty-eighth birthday. He had three Oscar nominations as Best Director, for The Miracle Worker, Bonnie & Clyde and Alice's Restaurant. He won a Tony Award for the original stage production of "The Miracle Worker", which became his ticket to Hollywood. Eight actors earned Oscar nominations for their performances in his films: Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft (The Miracle Worker), Estelle Parsons, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Gene Hackman and Michael J. Pollard (all from Bonnie & Clyde), and Chief Dan George (Little Big Man). Duke, Bancroft and Parsons were winners.
I got to see him in person, at the Virginia Film Festival (maybe 1998?), where in addition to a evening Q&A about his entire career was also on hand for screenings of Mickey One and Night Moves.
R.I.P., Arthur
