Should they?

Or is Stan Lee just banking in on new technology?

should who what?

and of course stan lee is cashing in on new technology trends, it's what he does now that he's a geezer. but i think you were probably refering to marvel, and not stan lee actually, they're not one and the same.

they are only enjoyable when the movie uses the comic as a jumping off point. spiderman and x-men were great movies because they stepped out of the shadow of the comic books. same for robin williams' Popeye. just kidding.

always had a crush on Robert Guillaume, I guess.

Benson! I knew it sounded familiar!

I LIKED Popeye. It was so stupid it was funny, I watched it several times back in the day.

Anyhoo, back to topic. Any writing is fair game. Stan Lee says comics are stories of people... so why shouldn't they be subject matter for film?

There is a delicate balance that needs to be maintained when committing these stories to film, though. Batman & Robin to me was way overboard on campiness. Batman and Batman Returns had the dark edge that many classic comic stories had. Many were pulp fiction in pictorial form.

It will be easy to make them too cheesy... so care must be used while spreading.

That's my pat of butter on the issue.

I'm more concerned about the casting of Daredevil!!!

X-Men granted was good, but I don't think spiderman was all inspiring.

Tank Girl is the best comic to movie by far hands down

So if the question is 'shoud' they make comics into movies, the anwser i give is i cant see why not, so far all the ones ive seen have been successful, fun to watch and above all nothing morally wrong with them

I believe they should carry on with the trend...it can`t do no harm.
Spidermen was decent, X-Men was just ok,Blade was fantastic and I`m looking forward to The Hulk nexy year. Eric Bana is a very impressive up and comer.

One comic translation I`d love to see made is Danger Girl...as lond as they completely avoided the Charlie`s Angels angle that some braindead execs would no doubt want to take.

Spiderman, while not entirely true to the comic, is far and far the best comic adaption to date. I am just hoping that they bring venom into the sequel. And yes, I know this would mean spiderman would have to travel into outer space, but honestly, this wouldn't come across well in a movie. So I suggest the good old cliche of a comet crashing. The total awesomeness of venom would well and truly make up for it. OH! And carnage.. SPIDERMAN and VENOM team up to fight CARNAGE!! WOW!! It practically writes itsef

Other comics which I think have movie potential include:

The Punisher (already done, but it contained a lot of SUCK factor)
X-Men (but do it right - what the hell happened to Gambit and Nightcrawler?? Apparently nightcrawler will be in the next film though)
GlimmerRats (Not sure who does this, and i have only read the graphic novel of this, but it's unreal... half the characters in the comic already look like movie stars.. the main guy looks like Hicks/Reese from Aliens/Terminator , sorry, I don't remember his name. )
Alien Vs Predator (haven't we waited long enough to see the Predator face off against humanities greatest threat? Heck, the predator has an alien skull - which I might add, is a bit stupid, seeing as aliens have an exoskeleton, and therefore, no skull- in his ship)

Comics which should never be (or should have never been) made into films

Captain America
Any manga (i'm sure to get flames for this )

SPIDER-MAN = GOLD!!!

Anything by Sam Raimi = gold!!!!

yep, u're right.
so, any news here or is this theme too old now?
well, there was Hellboy in between, which i liked for the humor. The Punisher was not that great, except i found it interesting a mainstream movie can be so violent.
more generally, i regret that the movie industry is 20 years back in compariosn to the comics they make a movie version of, as far as censorship is concerned. as an example, i'm really looking forward to at last being able to see *one* movie based on Vertigo ("mature readers", whatever this ****in' expression means... and i insist on the beautiful F-word here!), which'll be coming soon, Constantine (based on Hellraiser) (and still waiting for Gaiman's Death, or the Sandman... sigh!...)... but i'm almost certain it won't be as hard as the comic. when one thinks that before the big trend of making movies based on comics (does it mean movie makers have less ideas of their own???), comics were back in comparison to movies, and now it seems to be the opposite. i don't think Daredevil will ever be the boyfriend of an ex porn-actress in the DD movie...

oh, and ... maybe there's a way of going thru the f* censorship (i put the star myself, f* 'em!!) even here: write another language! "putain de bordel de merde", like that guy said in the Matrix 2. (that's why Americans were allowed to hear it, their knowledge of foreign languages being as it is...)

uhh... does it work with "hostia puta"???

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! censorship speaks only English, just like Bush! (even if he sometimes tries to hablar espagnol, what a pain...)...

Well, I, for one, am glad they're finally making some pretty damn decent comic book movies.

The 70's and 80's had some terrible comic book movies (other than Superman I & II) but the 90's got better with the first Batman movie.
I loved Spider-man 1 & 2 as well as X-men 1 & 2.
Hulk, Daredevil, Hellboy, and the Blade movies were all great movies to me too.

With the latest Batman movie around the corner and Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider coming up soon after I'm pretty stoked about where the trend is going.

I know people didn't like Hulk and Daredevil as much as I did but I've been a comic fan all my life and getting to see these things in "real life" is a hellova treat for me as long as they're not corny and awkward looking like the days of the past (anyone remember Captain America and Spiderman from a couple decades ago?)

I just bought the new Punnisher DVD and as long as it's nothing like the Lungren version from the 80's I'm sure I'll enjoy it regardless what critics thought of it.

I'm really curious how they'll do a new Superman movie and not have him look like a freak wearing red underwear over a blue suit (that just never looked as right in real life as it does in the comics).

Yep, i guess with all the trend due to the Matrix black leather look, which one can see in the X-Men and DD in comparison to the comics, that Superman is reaaaal difficult for them to "modernize".
i didn't know about Ghost Rider, and i always liked the character. if I'm right he's not so famous, how come they choose precisely him to make a movie about? (though, Vertigo is quite underground and Constantine is something i really never would've expected to se on the screen). is it already known who'll be the actor and director and so on?
DD: the scene in the rain was real touching. at last!!! we comic fans could "visually see" how he perceives things.
and Hulk wasn't so bad as the critics said, i agree. it was even theatrical sometimes, experimental. liked it. plus Jennifer Connelly was there...

After seeing HULK I was terribly depressed.

This movie was not a sperhero movie. It was more like a schizophrenic pyscologocal thriller.

The movie was good under this psy. thriller category. But not a fun movie like SPiderman or even Batman.

So the question arises , who was the target audience? Kids , teens, or adults? What was Mr.Anglee thinking?

This was definitely not a family movie like spideys.
I respect AngLee for what he is, but he just has never read those hulk comics as a child & has interpreted the story in a totally serious way cos some intellectual directors just dont understand comics(soo boring).
But other mature & oldies like Lucas , Ray Haryy hausen etc. even today live comics, & can relate to them just like kids do.

Isnt injustice being done to Hulk fans?
What can be done to avoid such mis matches or movie character+directors?
