And yeah, Japan peaked in the 60’s and 70’s, but there was still a wealth of films from them during the 80’s worth mentioning.
I know I’m likely in the minority here. I’ve mentioned previously their mixing of genres don’t work well often. The US had the same problems at times with this, but more not as silly. 48 hours was a shining example of the comedy buddy cop formula. And while I liked Beverly Hills Cop, it also grated on my nerves at times.
I don’t expect you’ll have enjoyed either of them, however.
The HK martial arts/comedy/horror films were sometimes a mess.
Unless it was Nam Choi. I haven’t seen Erotic Ghost Story, but I have really enjoyed his few films I have seen.

Ditto. It's the first locational obsession I had as a movie lover. I went back to it after a long absence and it's like I never left. HK, thanks for being there.
Depends on what kind of HK cinema you're talking about. They did learn a lot from the US. They took the formula and improved it. HK entertainment of the 80s and 90s is so much superior to their American equivalents, it's not even funny. As for Japan... their peak entertainment was in the 1970s.
When it comes to art cinema, Hong Kong isn't on the top, but the US at the same time definitely isn't either lol.

Hong Kong. cinema in the 80’s and 90’s could have learned a lot from Japan and The US during that same time period.
Thankfully, they had Lam Choi and WKW.
