Wolfs - Brad Pitt and George Clooney in a Jon Watts film

Tools

It was announced in September 2021 that Jon Watts would write and direct an untitled thriller film, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt starring and producing. Apple TV+ acquired the rights to the film after winning a studio bidding war against studios including Sony Pictures (which would later take over theatrical distribution rights), Lionsgate, Annapurna Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Netflix and Amazon Studios (now called Amazon MGM Studios). Production began in New York City in January 2023, with Amy Ryan joining the cast. Larkin Seiple serves as cinematographer, with the film titled Wolfs. In February, Austin Abrams and Poorna Jagannathan were added to the cast.
Principal photography began in early January 2023 in New York City. Clooney and Pitt filmed scenes in Harlem and Chinatown. Filming was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Following their partnership on Napoleon, Apple entered another agreement with Sony Pictures Releasing to distribute the film in theaters. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 20, 2024.

I do like the title thing.

It would never have occurred to me that there was a Pulp Fiction connection - or at least a reference.

That Watts guy is a clever kid!

Also, I'm starting to see the trailer for this movie a lot at the theaters. Wouldn't be surprised if Apple tries to get some awards for it.

I keep scoresheets for different directors, and I've been waiting for the next Jon Watts movie. I want one to knock Clown off of his top 5.

How confident is Apple in this movie? It has already greenlit a sequel

This is definitely one of the hottest titles at the Venice Film Festival - take about old-fashioned star power!

The Lido is in a frenzy for Wolfs.

Backed by the star power of its veteran A-list stars, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, the Jon Watts-directed film from Apple and Sony had a triumphant world premiere at the Venice Film Festival late Sunday night on the Lido. Expectedly, the crush of fans and media situated outside Palazzo del Cinema went wild for the pair as they arrived on the scene ahead of the screening. And once the final frames hit the screen and the credits rolled, Wolfs received a nearly five-minute standing ovation. Pitt and Clooney seemed to be soaking up the attention with Pitt singing along to Sade and Clooney offering a “Grazie” to close it out.

Wolfs, also written by Watts, casts Pitt and Clooney as fixers who accidentally end up working the same job. Produced by Clooney’s Smokehouse and Pitt’s Plan B, the film also stars Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind and Zlatko Burić. Watts and Dianne McGunigle produced alongside Clooney, Pitt, Grant Heslov, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Michael Beugg served as executive producer.

Just last month, it was confirmed that a Wolfs sequel is in the works at Apple. The movie is also getting a limited theatrical release via Sony on Sept. 20, followed by a global launch on Apple TV+ on Sept. 27.

The appearance from two of Hollywood’s most beloved movie stars in Venice underscored a breakout theme at this year’s Venice Film Festival: Movie stars are back! Leading the pack are Pitt and Clooney. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix will sing and slither their way back to Venice as DC villains in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore return to the canals for The Room Next Door, Pedro Almodóvar’s English-language debut.

Daniel Craig toplines Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, which also stars Lesley Manville and Drew Starkey. Nicole Kidman is in Babygirl opposite Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas for filmmaker Halina Reijn. Cate Blanchett stars in Alfonso Cuarón’s small-screen series Disclaimer opposite Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen for Apple TV+.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s return to the underworld with a stacked cast, opened the festival with Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, Willem Dafoe, Catherine O’Hara and Italian legend Monica Bellucci. A few more: Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist brings Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Joe Alwyn; Justin Kurzel’s The Order delivered Nicholas Hoult, Jude Law and Tye Sheridan, and more.

It looks like Apple decided to give this a very limited theatrical release, and for one week only, before it starts streaming on AppleTV+.

So if you really want to watch this in a theater, you better do it ASAP. Otherwise you'll just have to stream it.

Wolfs is finally playing in theaters. My review:

Wolfs

The appeal of Wolfs is pretty simple, really: it's all about George Clooney and Brad Pitt's delightful display of star power and easygoing charisma.

That's all, really, but if you are already inclined to like them, then that's more than enough.

The premise of the movie is simple, like all buddy movies should be: they play fixers, who have to sort out a situation that is very compromising for a big-time politician, and they naturally make a big deal of how much they don't like each other, even though they really do have to work together on that thing.

Is that more than enough for a movie to be eminently watchable? With the cast that director Jon Watts has assembled here, it definitely is.

Try watching it on the big screen if you get a chance, you won't be sorry.

Apple put out a new trailer, it starts streaming Friday, IIRC

I'm watching this now and finding it pretty boring. Pitt and Clooney are decent, but the story isn't very good and it is lacking a spark.
