Move Over, Darling (1963)

Move Over, Darling is a remake of the 1940 classic My Favorite Wife starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. I'm a big fan of the original, and it's tough to find a remake that's as good as the original, so I didn't get my hopes up too high for the remake, but this move was almost as good as the original.

Move Over, Darling stars James Garner and Doris Day, and again, they have fantastic chemistry together. The remake stays faithful to the original, and it's just as funny as the original movie. The final courtroom scene is hysterical.

I highly recommend this movie, regardless of whether or not you've seen the original version.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A Scanner Darkly is an animated sci-fi thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. It's an interesting story about the police efforts to stop a dangerous drug epidemic, but it's just a little bit too strange for my tastes.

The animation is unique because the film was shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope, so it doesn't have the look and feel of normal animation, but it works well for this story.

I'm currently watching (or re-watching) most of the Pixar shorts, and I had to stop and tell everyone to watch this one:

Partly Cloudy

It's one of the best, and everyone needs to watch it, hopefully before you submit your animation list:

It's been too long since I've seen the other two you posted (not my favorites), but just as an FYI to anybody using that link, whoever uploaded it changed the soundtrack and voices to it.

Thanks for the info about the Partly Cloudy short. I watched it on DVD, not from that link, so I didn't know that the sound was different.

The Plague Dogs (1982) by Martin Rosen

Well I take back what I said a few hours ago, this is the best animation I've seen today. I haven't been hit in the gut by an animation since I watched The Lion King when I was really young and in recent years Up. This one is much more powerful than The Lion King of course. The music is very memorable and that song for the brilliant last scene gave this movie that extra umph it needed for me to consider it for a 5. Snitter, Tod, and Rowf are great characters, but Snitter's character is especially powerful. This will definitely be on my animation list.

Felidae (1994)

This is right up my alley for animated movies; dark, adult oriented, and starring animals. A new cat in town gets caught up in a series of gruesome cat murders. You've got cat violence, cat sex, and cats swearing. It didn't quite have that extra kick to make me completely love it, but it was very good. It's a quick, easy watch and available on YouTube.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

I was pretty hyped to see the movie, I must admit. Everywhere you look there are tons of avatars, wallpapers etc.and people all around are saying "I am Groot!", like it's the new "May the force be with you". On top of that, Guardians got pretty good ratings on rottentomatoes.

Well... the movie turned out to be not quite up to par with my expectations. The very first thing that almost immediately disturbed my watching experience was the cinematography. Everything is kinda blurry and appears to be glowing. It looks more like a badly designed video game with too many filters on than a proper movie. What worries me is that this seems to be becoming an increasingly popular style in movies. Personally, I find it repulsive.

Other than that, the story fails to amaze. It's your usual beat-the-bad-guy-and-save-the-universe kind of deal. I'm not saying that it's bad, but I expected something more original from a movie with this kind of acclaim.

The characters, at least, were quite diverse and likable. Especially Groot, of course. Come on, the guy was saying the same three-word-line throughout the movie and yet he was interesting! Gotta count for something.

As for the humor, yes, the movie had me laughing here and there but it's not exactly a comedic masterpiece.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is... quite forgettable. I just can't see myself looking back at it ten years from now and thinking: "oh yes, what a great movie that was". I think I will more likely say: "Hmm... was that the animated movie with the Easter bunny and Santa, or am I confusing something?".

There is, however, something that's not forgettable about this movie at all, and that's the soundtrack, and no, I'm not talking about the score, I'm talking about Awesome Mix Vol. 1. It's a collection of great songs of decades past, all mastered in such a way that it sounds like it's actually played from an old tape. While I normally advocate sound quality over unreasonable sentiments, this is the one time I'm going to make an exception.

I've not seen the film, but I just wanted to point out that being acclaimed does not equal originality and never really has.

Welcome to the human race...
Interstellar -

I guess these days every year needs its big flashy movie about humans going into space that ultimately falls apart due to bad writing. 2012 had Prometheus, 2013 had Gravity, and 2014 has Interstellar. Even the good bits feel way too derivative to truly enjoy (the score that rips off Koyaanisqatsi, for instance).

Did you watch it in German?

I know German is the film's original language, but I kind of want to watch it in English. I heard the English voice cast was quite good (featuring Michael Madsen amongst others).

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

This is a cool, weird and pretty intense flick.

It's a noirish sci-fi film about an undercover agent, called Bob Arctor, who's infiltrating in a drug environment for the secret agency called 'New Path'. We learn about his past and current life and we see him get more and more addicted to the drug he's supposed to fight. Because of strange circumstances, he suddenly receives the task to investigate himself.

A victim of his own drug investigation, Arctor starts to become schizofrenic. Failing to ask himself the right questions about his condition and the ultimate purpose of his task, he doesn't realize that he's part of a much bigger plan...

The film is very intruiging and has a weirdly "narcotic", trippy feeling to it (in a good way). The plot is kind of complex and takes a few side roads before it gets to its point (like every good noir story), but after the confusion and mystery, I think the film offers a satisfying conclusion that stays morally and narratively ambiguous and "open" enough to make it interesting and worth thinking about.

This means that I have yet another candidate for my animation list.

Flash Gordon (1980)

The brilliance of 80's cheese comes out in this movie. I dont how to explain this but the whole story is cheesy the acting is cheesy and the effects... yep cheesy. I still loved watching this movie, I do enjoy watching these retro movies and how far we have come. Movies like this make me smile and laugh all the way through and loved every moment.

4/5 Stars

Lord High Filmquisitor
The Wind Rises - 7.5/10

While this isn't the Miyazaki swan song that it was making itself out to be, it is neve-the-less an enjoyable, magical and immensely moving film. Personally, I found myself profoundly more interested in the protagonist's obsessive commitment to perfecting aviation technology despite his complicated feelings toward creating weapons that will be used to kill and destroy than I was in his purely fictitious personal life (which all seemed pretty dull to me). The dream sequences, interplay between imagination and reality and more fantastical elements were well done and under-utilized and I would have loved seeing more of them as well. It has perhaps the most haunting closing line of any film I have ever seen: "airplanes are beautiful, cursed dreams waiting to be swallowed by the sky."

Alien 3 - 6/10

I watched this (and the next film) purely because of the Movie Defense Force episodes that feature them (same with Event Horizon). And really, all told, this wasn't a bad film: undeserving of its poor critical reception as well as my initial reception of it. It was a perfectly servicable installment into a franchise in which the only film that I really care enough to watch on a regular basis is the first one. And, like Movie Defense Force's Jim Sterling rightly points out, it takes the franchise to its only logical outcome: not survival, but at best mutually assured destruction. Ultimately, what kept this movie down for me was poor CGI, criminal under-use of the Xenomorph, not experimenting enough with the Xenomorph's newfound ability to incorporate biological traits from its victims and the fact that the movie ran about 30 minutes too long

Alien: Resurrection - 6.5/10

Like Alien 3, this film is, I feel, unduely criticised and ultimately average. Despite being even more of a stock slasher film than Alien 3, it is in almost every way superior to it. The special effects are vastly superior (thanks in part to improved technology and in part to a return to more physical props for the Xenomorphs), it has a superior cast, it far better directed and is far more ambitiously written (even if it ultimately isn't as well written). The underwater is a phenominal composition of special effects and choreography and a legitimate highlight for the series as a whole.

Annie Hall - 7/10

This was supposed to be Vertigo, but that had to be postponed to tomorrow due to time constraints (ie, my girlfriend's understandable need to be up at 5:30 AM to get ready for work). I actually have some pretty complicated feelings toward this film, which is weird given how relatively straight-forward the whole thing is. It was intelligently written - touching on a lot of heavy themes effectively while still keeping its light-hearted tone - constantly broke the fourth wall in meaningful ways (something which I always love seeing) and was riotously funny and immediately quotable from scene to scene. When it really comes down to it, however, despite enjoying it in-the-moment, I never really found it engaging on a larger level; I could never really enjoy the overall film as a unit. It's a film that I ultimately appreciate more than I enjoy despite how much I actually enjoyed it.

Charlotte's Web (1973)

As much as I didn't want to watch this because of my fear of spiders, I watched Charlotte's Web for the animation list, and it was better than I expected it to be, but keep in mind that I watched some of it through my fingers the way some people watch horror movies.

This is a cute story about how a spider helps save a pig who is destined to be killed. It was a hard watch for me, but I think most people will enjoy this movie. The characters are cute and fun, and the songs are enjoyable. The voice cast is excellent, and it helped that many of the voice actors are among some of my favorite actors. Debbie Reynolds as the voice of Charlotte the spider made it much easier for me to watch. (I had expected to hear a spider sound like Vincent Price, or some other horror legend.)

It probably won't make my list (for obvious reasons), but this is a good movie, and I would definitely recommend it.

Training Day - 4.5 out of 5.

The first thing I thought of immediately after the movie finished was "I can't believe I've only just seen this now". This movie was great, maybe even a bit better than great. Denzel's performance was solid and damn near perfect as always.

The tension seemed to just keep building throughout the entire movie and never dropped off. Kept me glued to the screen the whole time, wondering what was going to happen next.

Very good action/thriller indeed!

I watched it in English and really liked the voice acting. (yes, horrible me not watching a film in its original form)
