I'm one of the few who really likes this movie and the final chase which leads to the final beating hypes me up so much every time I watch it.

It kind of has to do with the ending of source film Infernal Affairs so...

WARNING: "Infernal Affairs/The Departed" spoilers below
One of the best things about Infernal Affairs was how the mole (Andy Lau in the original, Matt Damon in the remake) finally starts to have a change of conscience (as shown by him killing the main villain) but it results in a lot of good people dying and his love interest leaves him for being a lying criminal. At the end of Infernal Affairs, Lau is alive but he has to live with the hell he's made for himself. At the end of The Departed, Damon comes home after losing everything and finds Mark Wahlberg's ******* cop in his apartment waiting to kill him, so Damon does nothing but let Wahlberg kill him. That never sat right with me because I know how the original played out and so Damon letting himself be killed feels like less of a punishment and more of an easy way out for him after all his screw-ups. It doesn't help that Wahlberg's character doesn't exist in the original film so to me it feels like he was more or less invented in order to kill off Damon and neatly tie up the whole damn film. That's without getting into the infamous example of the rat appearing in the final shot of the movie, too...
