I've done it once at the bachelor's party of a mate of mine. Was proper slammed before getting up on stage, but found it to be great fun nonetheless (can't speak for the audience though). I sang How You Like Me Now and If I Ever Leave This World Alive. One guy sang I Want Your Sex and took off his shirt in the process.

I used to go to Karaoke a lot with my army buddy, Brian, but since he moved to FLA, it's less fun, though I have gone a few times. I almost always sing Johnny Cash. I have a terrible voice. I do want to go again eventually, but not many people I know like going, and I won't go by myself. Anxiety and all that.

Holden - strange co-incidence - I read your karaoke thread a few days ago and then today there was a programme on BBC radio 4 about the karaoke scene in Portland. I don't think you live there but anyway just thought you might be tickled to know that the BBC made a little 30 minute programme about it! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0497zz3
Hey there, MoFo. If you click THIS LINK you should be taken to a Facebook page that has a video of me singing a capella. It's an entry for a contest at the Maryland Live Casino (which is about ten minutes from my house). If you're logged into FB and feel compelled, you can vote for me. If I'm in the top hundred vote-getters (of about 180) I will have a spot in the preliminaries, singing some live band karaoke. The grand prize, if I were to get that far, is $10,000!!!
So, take a gander, and if you want to throw a vote my way (you can actually once a day, so go nuts), I'd be much obliged. If not, just take a look and make fun of my a capella singing (NOT my thing, Man).

I make it almost a priority to do karaoke, especially in a foreign country where the only people you know are those traveling with you, the locals certainly don't!... I'd say 90% of the time was when I was sober, as I don't drink anymore.
Then if it doesn't automatically do it, sort by "Most Votes". I am sitting in seventh place, in the early goings on.
Thanks for the link. That link let me watch the videos, but it won't let me vote without a Facebook account. (I think hubby has one. I'll try to get him to vote for you when he gets home later.)
You have a pretty good voice, but you seem to have trouble hitting some of the high notes. You have some tough competition there, but I think you're better than a few of the people who have more votes than you right now. (And you're definitely better than some of the people I've seen on American Idol. )
Thanks. Yeah, I have no formal training, so a capella is NOT my thing, not comfortable with it. Singing with my band or with karaoke is another kettle of fish. If I can get in and sing with their band, I think I have a fighting chance. Also helps that I am one of the few rock/blues voices in the competition, vs. a lot of slow groove contemporary R&B. Maybe? Who knows?

I don't think "Jenny" is a good song for your voice, but you seem to flow better with the music than without it. You have a bit of a raspiness to your voice. I'm far from a music expert, but I think you could do a nice version of a Joe Cocker song. Maybe something like this song?:
When my mom was alive, we'd go karaoke every Friday night! Joni by Conway Twitty was our weekly duet of choice. My go to solo songs were always Strawberry Wine by Deena Carter & Old Time Rock n Roll by Bob Seger. Funnn times! I don't karaoke much anymore, but I play sets...that kinda counts right? Haha
Ive got a string of tales I could tell from doing Karaoke at bars over the years, psst! little secret, you have the best time at the "dives" cause nobody gives a damn and everyone has a good time.
The first time I ever did karaoke was about 1990-91 and I was meeting some friends at a bar, they said they were gonna do karaoke (Id never heard of it). Well it was a college bar, all the people in their early 20s, and my friends hit the stage. Now both grew up together in Long Island, had leather jackets, and cigs. I exaggerate this not, they brought stools onto the stage to sit with swag and sing Band On The Run, all the while trying to look as cool as possible. They were bad, and I broke their balls.
They said "Well you try!", and I said sure, I think I even said "Let me show you how its done", and took to the stage for my song I put in "Roxanne" by The Police, I was stone cold sober.
To those possibly unfamiliar with the song....
Have you ever heard "You think youre a great singer till you do it in public"? The guitar starts, drumbeat, and I come in with "Roxanne!", and it was b a d, like turn your head to look level bad. Oh, I was in misery. I was trying to sing this song that even today Id have no hope in hell of singing right. I think a college girl halfassedly tossed a pretzel at me, my friends were literally hiding under the table in comical display of their shame of me.
They didnt need to break my balls after, I had suffered enough. I knew then I would either never do it again, or it could never get worse. I decided it never could get worse, and it took a good year Id say before I found myself able to do it competently. Lots of good times and tales from it.
im very aware of my lack of talent when it comes to singing. in england i hear they have places where you have your friends get your own room so that no one else hears you, that would be fun.
over here you basicly have to get up on stage in front of everybody-no way!
my friends did that once and got booed off the stage, luckily before snapchat and facebook happened lol!
