Best Of The Year/Every Year

Tools

Back from supper to finish my 2015 list of normie blockbusters.

Wow such a weak year for the cinemas. Suicide Squad was even better than all of these movies.

Best Picture 2015 Raul Style
10. The Martian
9. Goosebumps (It was a very weak year, in that it was only because I refuse to see any good movies)
8. South Paw
7. Avengers Age of Ultron
6. Brooklyn
5. Pixels
4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
3. Paul Blarp Mall Blarp 2
2. The Revenant (SO MANY VISTAS!)

best movie of 2005 is......

I could care less for bum fun because that's very gross and Rocky is best movie of all time. But hot lesbian action? f*ck yeah! Where my dude-bros at?!?!

Honorable mention to Brendan Fraser and his penis.

Cynema I don't want to be mean but I do think you're doing CMBYN a disservice with your rants. Sean hasn't even seen the movie and he will probably dislike it not because of the movie but because his perception of the film in general has been affected negatively. I can only imagine some others feel the same way as Sean does. We both know CMBYN is a great movie, we should let others figure that out themselves. Who cares if Oldman wins the Oscar? It's the Oscars. Oldman winning won't make CMBYN less of a film anyway.

This is a good point. I am probably more of an Oscar type film lover than anyone else on the forum yet still my favorites in each category rarely win. Can't imagine taking the Oscars that seriously.

You are very wise, Swanny.

I enjoy Cyn's posts when he's being sensible but this was pull your hair out kind of stuff. I asked nicely in another thread but incase he misses this, please dont do it again. It was bordering on kinda insane, mate. Put the focus on you much much more than the movie.

It's a beautiful film so let's just leave others to like it or not.

2014: Top Ten Films

01. Phoenix (Christian Petzold)
02. Mommy (Xavier Dolan)
03. Ex Machina (Alex Garland)
04. It Follows (David Robert Mitchell)
05. Nightcrawler (Dan Gilroy)
06. Force Majeure (Ruben Ostlund)
07. John Wick (Chad Stahelski)
08. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson)
09. Birdman (Alejandro González Iñárritu)
10. Spring (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead)

2014 is the year i've seen the least films from this decade. Have only seen 28 while i've seen at least 35 from all the others. That means almost a third of the films i've seen from 2014 are on that list, with that in mind it's not a bad top ten. Just watched Phoenix two days ago so maybe it's a bit soon to have it first, thought it was amazing though and i haven't stopped thinking about it since. The only other secured favourite is Mommy, kind of nervous to revisit, It Follows especially since The Babadook didn't hold up too well recently. The Grand Budapest Hotel is the one i want to see again most as i feel like i should have loved it but i didn't quite get there.

2014: Best Performances

Best Actor:

01. Jake Gylenhaal - Nightcrawler
02. Antoine Olivier Pilon - Mommy
03. Johannes Bah Kuhnke - Force Majeure
04. Michael Keaton - Birdman
05. Joaquin Pheonix - Inherent Vice

Very solid category surprisingly. The top three are great particularly Jake especially, that was the first time he truly impressed me. As i said i probably won't see Birdman again anytime soon at least, but i think i'd still be into Keaton he was very good. Need to rewatch Inherent Vice haven't seen it since it came out, was very into Phoenix at the time anyway.

Best Actress:

01. Nina Hoss - Phoenix
02. Alicia Vikander - Ex Machina
03. Anne Dorval - Mommy
04. Sheila Vand - A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
05. Essie Davis - The Babadook

Glad i saw Phoenix in time as i had the main girl in It Follows in fifth place purely because i couldn't come up with anyone else, clearly i have a lot to watch from 2014. The top three are great although Dorval could be in Supporting. I liked Vand quite a bit. Essie Davis performance went down a lot on my recent rewatch of The Babadook but i still think she is good in certain scenes.

Best Supporting Actor:

01. Ethan Hawke - Boyhood
02. Steve Carell - Foxcatcher
03. Ronald Zehrfeld - Phoenix
04. Oscar Isaac - Ex Machina
05. Adrien Brody - The Grand Budapest Hotel

I like all five of these a good amount. Hawke is the best thing about Boyhood IMO, even though his character is a typical divorced dad he was great. I'm not crazy about Foxcatcher but Carell blew me away, didn't think he was capable of that even though i've always liked him. Phoenix wouldn't work without Zehrfeld and while i don't think the bottom two are outstanding they are good performances.

Best Supporting Actress:

01. Nina Kunzendorf - Phoenix
02. Suzanne Clement - Mommy
03. Patricia Arquette - Boyhood
04. Saoirse Ronan - The Grand Budapest Hotel
05. Katherine Waterston - Inherent Vice

Small yet very important role for Kunzendorf, she is excellent. The other four are solid, none are favourites though.

This might just do nobody any good.
Favorites from 2014-

1. Under the Skin
2. Inherent Vice
3. The Look of Silence
4. Boyhood
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel
6. Phoenix
7. The Salt of the Earth
8. Two Days, One Night
9. Gone Girl
10. Whiplash
11. The LEGO Movie
12. John Wick
13. Wild Tales
14. Foxcatcher
15. A Most Violent Year
16. The Raid 2
17. Calvary
18. Clouds of Sils Maria
19. Force Majeure
20. Interstellar
21. The Guest
22. Nightcrawler
23. The Rover
24. It Follows
25. The Drop

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
2014 Best Director

Here are my nominees:

Richard Linklater- Boyhood
Christopher Nolan- Interstellar
Ava DuVerney- Selma
James Gunn- Guardians of the Galaxy

With the winner being:
David Fincher- Gone Girl

Wild Tales was awesome. You'd think a revenge anthology would become repetitive but nah i liked them all and i think each segment was close to being better than the previous one with the first being just okay. Interested in more from the director, he knows how to depict chaos in an exhausting, relentless way and despite the short screentime he created a bunch of interesting characters. By the end of each segment i felt completely worn down yet i was excited to enter some new crazy world he had created.

It would definitely go into my top ten of 2014 as well as a few performances; the wife, the engineer and the dad in the fourth segment being the standouts for me.

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
2014 Best Cinematography

Nightcrawler
Boyhood
Interstellar

I do not like Budapest at all, but I do give it props for looking great.

Glad to see some love for Foxcatcher. It’s not my favorite of ‘14 but it’s among the most memorable for me this decade. I always drag in the beginning but once I’ve settled into the rhythm, it’s mesmerizing and turns utterly disturbing. It’s also a stealth winner for cinematography that year. Greig Fraser finds a rare balance, lending beauty to mundanity but not enough that it shows. Not instantly.

Of course, props to Carrell, though I’m wondering if I should really be surprised that Brick Tamland can send chills down my spine with a blank stare...

Agree with everything you said. Have seen Foxcatcher three times now and it gets better every time. Everything about the film sneaks up on you and, yes, the cinematography is fantastic. Why the hell doesn't Miller make more films.

Foxcatcher could've easily made my top as well if I hadn't chosen certain weird (and less seen) favorites on purpose.
Great film by a serious director.
