Are there any female leads In Hollywood movies (preferably from 2010 +) that stand out to you the most? Why?

Sean Baker's Tangerine starring genuine transgender women was pretty radical. Amateur actors that he pretty much built the movie around. Hilarious material.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Brie Larson's character in Room is interesting, not quite your typical leading lady role and she spends a lot of time without make up on which is different to a lot of Hollywood movies where female characters magically acquire flawless make-up despite being in perilous situations. Rosamund Pike's performance in Gone Girl is good, her character is an interesting one. Also Sandra Bullock in Gravity - not one of my favourites but interesting in that you've got a female character that's not sexualised at all in terms of her portrayal and wardrobe and with no romantic plotline. Felicity Jones in Rogue One if you're looking for something more action-genre-oriented. Scarlett Johansson in Under the Skin - not sure that's Hollywood. Definitely different!

Interesting non-US movies from the 2010s would include Wadjda, The Handmaiden, Philomena, Amour. Carey Mulligan in Suffragette gives a really good performance as a downtrodden factory worker turned women's rights activist.

At the moment I can only think of a Hollywood lead in a UK film, namely Scarlett Johansson in Under the Skin. I thought it was a really intelligent performance and I enjoyed watching her.

Oh good . I'm glad someone else mentioned it.

Rooney Mara in Carol. Completely dominates the film because you don't want to look at anyone else, plus:

WARNING: spoilers below
After the incident at the house when Therese is travelling home and bursts into tears, she was so convincing that it upset me. So that's one up to Patricia .

Its for my film studies course work, I have to post to forums to get a wider range of sources in order to answer a question, mine is about female leads in Hollywood (as you can probably tell.) Therefore any opinions on the questions i have posted is extremely helpful.

Still no need to post multiple threads. Also you should probably be up front about why you're asking.

Tilda Swinton. The way she delivers dialogue like it is made out of chocolate, the way she manages to transfigure herself for her roles is always strikingly fresh, and she never gives me the impression that she phones anything in.

The first time I watched her in something was in The Box by Orbital, and ever since then I have admired the way she manages to express and evoke themes without a word. In hindsight, I also suspect that she is one of the primary reasons why Only Lovers Left Alive is in my top ten.

I like that . But then I like chocolate so I know where you're coming from. Orlando 's my favourite of her roles.

Blake Lively. She's very talented. Though she's not always in the most prestigious films, she has been in some good ones. And she's often the standout character in the movies she's been cast in.
