(For this month's War theme.)

Lawrence of Arabia 1962 David Lean (Re-watch)

'The film as a whole is widely considered a masterpiece of world cinema and one of the greatest films ever made. Additionally, its visual style has influenced many directors, including George Lucas, Sam Peckinpah, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Brian De Palma, Oliver Stone, and Steven Spielberg, who called the film a "miracle".'

For me, the first half 100/100, 'The epic of all epics'..

After Hours, strong 8 out of 10. I love movies that have a slight sense of surrealism to them, and After Hours was perfect in that aspect.

you take it away... to show them what they had

6/10

i'm not sure why but this movie was mindblowing to me.
it's because of his minimalism, i guess.

how do you guys do those pocporn ratings?

Bob's last movie...Redford announced he would retire from acting after The Old Man & The Gun. And it's a nice send off too, for the veteran actor who started out in 1960, and has starred in some beloved films. There's a segment in the movie where Redford's character Forest Tucker who's a life long, gentleman bank robber, reflects back on his early days of robbery...and the film shows us photos and a film clip of a very young Robert Redford and as far as the story goes that was fine, but as a tribute to Robert Redford it was quite touching, while being understated and within the bounds of the story. So kudos to the film for that!

I liked the movie and it's slow paced flow. Nothing overly exciting happens. No big action or chase scenes to speak of. Mostly it's just Bob doing what he does best, being Redford and showing us his quiet understated charm. He's paired up with Sissy Spacek in a subdued and low keyed romance story line. Actually it's more like a friendship about two people getting to know one another, with one of them being a notorious bank robber!

Based on a 'mostly true story', The Old Man and the Gun is worth watching on a quiet Sunday evening.

Nice review, CR. It's an enjoyable film by a bunch of pros. Redford underplayed the part perfectly, and reminded everybody that he could act a little.. As you say, good send off to a legendary guy.

Tokyo Idols (2017)

It is an exercise of bigotry of the lowest caliber. This "documentary" portrays a facet of Japanese culture as if it were some kind of disturbing activity that should not exist. Of course, it has zero objectivity and presents the concept of idol from a consistently condescending perspective. I think about this documentary as analogous to the perspective of racist Europeans when they were describing primitive African tribes: a completely arrogant perspective that sees its subject as something disgusting.

In cinematic terms is very mediocre: it feels like a poorly edited YouTube video rather than a documentary and it only interviews 2 people 90% of the time: one idol and one of her fans, as if a sample of 2 people (which might be paid artists from all I know) could describe the millions of people who participate in idol culture. Essentially a piece of ethnocentric propaganda that is an insult of the whole subculture.
