DECENT

Persona
Gave up on it. Didn't rate it.

It's alright. Probably top 250.

I don't rate it all that highly. Not seen it for a long time though.

Just not a fan of Bergman?
I've just started it again now.
I've remembered that when I tried to watch it before, the subtitles were about 30-60 seconds out of time with the pictures.

Is this the one where there's like a family having a picnic by the lake?

It's like a cross between Pierrot Le Fou and Last Year at Marienbad.

Oh, that would make it unwatchable for sure, unless you only want visuals.

Well thank god that's over.

I like the scenes on the sea shore, that was about it.

Yes there was some beautiful use of light, but it was highly contrived.

I didn't find the acting particularly convincing, or the characters particularly interesting even.

It did strike me as a fairly poor attempt to reimagine LYAM.

I would never guess it's regarded as one of the greatest films of all time.

Make Way for Tomorrow
Never seen it
If you enjoy (seemingly) simplistic, humanstic dramas don't miss out on Make Way for Tomorrow.. it's arguably the best film I watched in 2023.

You gotta come around to Vertigo and Liberty Valance though; or I summon Lee Marvin's ghost to convince you...

haha. I'll give TMWSLV another go. Thanks.

How about you? Any on the list there that you didn't take a shine to?

I find Scarface '83 overrated though still like some things about it: The score, couple of scenes, Michelle Pfeiffer... '32 film is superior.

oh definitely. yeah, it's the Paul Muni film that's in the list.

They have sites you can use to resync subtitles.

Your taste is all around the place. Zero coherence.

There's no wrong way to enjoy art. If it speaks to you, and you enjoy it, then that's enough.

I agree that Vertigo is overrated. So much driving around. Having a character narrate a big twist, more or less directly to the audience, instead of revealing it at the same time the protagonist finds out.

Imagine the end of Sixth Sense, before the reveal of the twist, if another person clearly stated directly to the camera exactly what was about to happen.

It's a baffling choice.

Is there a way to "thumbs down" a post? @Yoda?

I think Hitch keeps us in suspense that way, instead of "shocking" us. It's the famous "are audience aware of the bomb or not?" scenario of his... which I think works very well in Vertigo. Maybe it's because I was so in-tune with Scottie's emotions all the way through but I never find the film anything less than engaging.

Nope! I can never be brought to justice.

Oh it wasn't about you. You're fine.

Wait, scratch that! Thumbs down! Thumbs down!

How liberal of you (derogatory)!

I agree that Vertigo is overrated.
It's overrated like any "best film of all time" from a cumulative list. Still, I think it's one of Hitch's best. It definitely wins atmosphere-wise. Film critics' obsession with this film is ridiculous, but let the poor guys be obsessed over something.

Is there a way to "thumbs down" a post? @Yoda?
There was a way to do this, but Yoda is such a positive guy he took away this option because he only believes in thumbs-up! His actions predated YouTube! He's a true pioneer!
