Rotten Tomatoes Drops Audience Score In Favor Of Verified Ratings

Rotten Tomatoes has officially dropped its traditional Audience Score in favor of a new “verified ratings Popcornmeter” system which will only measure ratings from fans who have actually purchased tickets through Fandango (owner of Rotten Tomatoes).

The announcement marks the first major change to Rotten Tomatoes since back in 2019 following the Captain Marvel controversy when Rotten Tomatoes dropped the audience “Want To See Feature.”

Now when users go to Rotten Tomatoes, they will see the “Popcornmeter” instead of the “Audience Score.”

That’s not all, as Rotten Tomatoes has also revamped how it makes scores available, which depends on the movie’s box office estimate (see below). No longer will scores be made available right away with a limited number of reviews or ratings available.
Basically the only way you can give a score is to prove you bought a ticket to see it, and to combat review bombing.

What about the immediate (compared to the VHS days 😒 ) home release these movies get now. How does it take streaming into consideration? Who uses Fandango?

It just makes me wonder why RT thinks this is worth doing? People usually don’t respond well to being forced to do anything.

Welcome to the human race...
because when i go on a website dedicated to aggregating critic opinions, what i really want to see are audience opinions. can't get those anywhere else.

The only reviews I ever paid attention to were mark f’s, Deadite’s and Iroquois’s. Seeing as how none of them post here anymore, I’ll have to start thinking for myself.

Probably because certain movies and shows the critics loved, audiences didnt and well, they didnt like that the audience didnt like those projects.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, let's not get carried away!!

I find that to be absolutely offensive.... to actual weasels, poor things, they don't deserve the comparison.
