Pretty tough one to think about, since I don't know about chart success unless it's a band I love

Vicki Lawrence -
The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia

WHA-KOO - Fabulous Dancer 1978

Palmer sang "Dirty Work" (and a few others) with Steely Dan

"Vehicle", The Ides of March
I really like Shirley Bassey's cover

Some 1960s ones

Astrud Gilberto - The Girl From Ipanema

? Mark & The Mysterians - 96 Tears

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth

The Youngbloods - Get Together

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense & Peppermints

Vanilla Fudge - Keep Me Hangin' On

that's so cool. never heard of it and i am a disco fan
First rap single to enter the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #36 in January 1980. .

that's the only hit she had?
Shirley had a relatively small but very loyal following in America (I assume Canada as well). I'm not sure why she was never bigger here. Probably was too traditional pop at a time when tastes were getting more rock and roll. She had a niche audience here. Goldfinger her only Hot 100 hit (#8), plus a couple Top Tens on the Adult Contemporary chart in a 60+ year career. But she is a legend in the UK, with more charting singles of course..

I listened to this song a lot in college. It just sounds like nostalgia, you know?
It really is a beautiful and wistful ode to better times. I can relate, there was a day during the pandemic when I was working from home where I played it over and over again and couldn't get enough.

The Sugarland cover is pretty good, too.

Yes, it's a song I've looped at a few points as well.

the lead singer of shocking blue was kind of sexy.
