Dr. Deathproof's Monster Mash and Malt Liquor

The trick is not minding
I’m here for the monsters and malt liquor. But mostly the monsters.

I just watched The Giant Gila Monster last night and have The Killer Shrews next on tap.

41. Tremors (1990)

Monsters: giant worms

Although it didn't do well in theaters, Tremors earned many fans by jumping into the burgeoning VHS rental marketplace. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are charming leads. You get a real sense of their friendship in the movie because they sound exactly like how me and my technician interact. The special effects are good and the supporting cast is very good, especially Michael Gross who showed his range by going from ultra-liberal dad on Family Ties to survivalist gun nut in this.

40. Arachnophobia (1990)

Monsters: spiders

Another 1990 film, Arachnophobia features a great cast, good effects, and a funny script. Seems like it's always the exterminator or hunter that turns out to be the best character in these movies because John Goodman is awesome. Much like Poltergeist, Spielberg produced this with someone else (Frank Marshall) directing, but it had Steven's fingerprints all over it. Literally - in one scene - where Spielberg visited the set and was hiding in Goodman's character's van during a shot. "Only you and I will know I'm here!" Funny guy.

Victim of The Night
43. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Monsters: Owlbear, dragon, mimic, gelatinous cube, displacer beast

Shit, my flight ended before I got a displacer beast!!! I never went back and finished it! Aigh!

Trouble with a capital "T"
42. The Deadly Mantis (1957)

Monsters: giant praying mantis

There were a ton of monster movies - especially giant animals and insects - in the 50's but this is my favorite from that era. I am partial to praying mantises - nature's little voracious badasses. The cast is pretty good and the effects look decent for the time. Infinitely rewatchable for me.

I seen that and really liked it so I looked it up and it was your choice in the 1950s Sci Fi/Creature B Movie Flicks HoF...which was great fun! We'll have to do that again. When it comes to monster flicks 50s scifi-monster stuff like The Deadly Mantis is what I like the most.

A deadly mantis is easily way more fun than a friendly mantis.

I love Tremors too! Quite possibly the perfect horror-comedy monster movie. Everyone's chemistry is amazing, and the monsters are top notch.

The only ones so far that I haven't seen are Lake Placid, Pacific Rim, and Godzilla King of Monsters. I'll have to check them all out soon.

39. Trollhunter (2010)

Monsters: trolls

Excellent found footage movie - good effects, good story - most of the characters were forgettable but Hans the Trollhunter was a boss. Very entertaining.

38. Godzilla (2014)

Monsters: atomic lizard, two giant insect things

A palatable remake that makes the 1998 version look like a home movie of someone's pet bearded dragon. Great cast - especially Bryan Cranston's hairpiece. Good effects. Forgettable foes but Godzilla is a boss.

37. Mysterious Island (1961)

Monsters: giant crab, Phorusrhacos, giant bees, giant Ammonite

One of Harryhausen's that seems to get slept on, but is a fascinating story with great stop motion effects. If you're a Harryhausen fan at all, make this a priority viewing.

36. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977)

Monsters: ghouls, bronze minotaur, giant wasp, giant walrus, troglodyte, smilodon

Another Harryhausen classic that, despite having to battle the juggernaut of Star Wars, did well in theaters. It doesn't quite hold up to the standards of the previous two Sinbad movies but is still entertaining. Also features Jane Seymour, who was coming off the success of Live and Let Die.

35. Cloverfield (2008)

Monsters: giant fish mutant thing

The viral marketing campaign behind Cloverfield helped to get massive levels of hype for this found footage giant monster flick. Decent cast, good effects, and maintains a level of mystique about the creature, its origins and its motivation.

I do remember when the teaser dropped in front of the first Transformers movie people were saying it was a Cthulhu movie or a live action Voltron movie. (I saw it! It's a lion! It's HUGE!) Not that I was disappointed, but a good Cthulhu or Voltron movie would be dope.

This has a special place in my heart as the first Harryhausen I was able to see in a theater.

I would have been old enough - and I do vaguely remember seeing Star Wars in '77, but I guess my folks didn't take me to see Sinbad.

We used to have 2 drive-in theaters literally minutes from our old house - I don't know if they showed Sinbad back in '77 but seeing Harryhausen stop-motion on a drive-in screen would have been amazing.

I remember when Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) first came out. I was a teenager at the time but not old enough to drive. I remember wanting to see it at the theater but I didn't get a chance to watch it until it came to TV. Cool film! I had the Harryhausen DVD set and watched a number of his movies and documentary on his career...interesting!
