The visual format wars continue and the victim is the original work of art. This makes "Pan and Scan" seem comparatively restrained.
Going Vertical: The New "Colorization" of Films
One word comes to mind for vertical films and it starts with 's'...Come to think of it, at least three 's' words fit the idea of ai created vertical films. Could we just please implant mobile phones directly into people's brains, ala pholobotomy and be done with this?

I'm reminded of Car Crash TV; "Is this a good idea? No!" "This is not how the highway code tells you how to make films!" Whose ever idea this was is going to win the Irresponsible Filmmaking Championships, I think.

And then, you have the one where the image re-orients itself when you rotate the phone 90 degrees, so you have an algorithmic process that makes decisions about the look of the movie. Couple that with AI image editing and we, poor humans might just as well just have an input screen where we click some boxes, set some defaults and add a line of text that says something like, "movie about raccoons who build arenas and compete for who can steal the most corn cobs"....comedy....90 minutes.....voice like Tom Hanks. Stand back and let AI go to it.

Artistic experience will continue to Balkanize. We will all be living in our version of the story. We will share recipes like ordering off the secret menu ("Ask for 'wild style'!"). In a way, it will be like a return to the ancient past where local bards would each have their own spin of classic tales.
Texts will be hopelessly destabilized. What is the original work of art when each viewer gets their own filter, character skins, randomization, and sensitivity reader AI?
And this will create a desperate thirst for genuine human connection, that magical juice called "authenticity" which sells method acting, doing your own stunts, promises about no CGI, etc.
The great paradox is that the better the VFX get, the more customizability we get, the more content we get, the less connected we feel and the less it seems real.
Expect a countermovement, a new Punk Rock movement, raw, amateur, unpolished, but often precocious and virtuosic. Maybe we're already there with TikTok and Instagram? All those amazing no-name guitar shredders, all those mime dancers hopping on trends, all those podcasts which are just long conversations.

Someone will have the official license for the likeness of Hanks, so some services will offer the authentic fake, the genuine licensed simulation.
