Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 100 this year

I know that for a lot of people, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is kind of an institution - something they've been watching every year since they were kids, and that they always look forward on Thanksgiving.

The MTDP is turning 100 this year - and still going strong.

Do you have any special memories of the MTDP, and if so, what are they? Have you ever watched it in person, or do you normally watch it on the telly? What are some of your favorite floats over the years?

I loved the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as a kid. I looked forward to the balloons and the singers lip-syncing to pop songs on their floats, the dance numbers in front of Macy's entrance and Santas entrance on the most fabulous in the parade. I don't watch it anymore but then its not really geared towards grown-ups.
I went to Gimbel's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was broadcast from Philadelphia. So the famous Gimbel's and Macy's feud used to play out on broadcast TV till Gimbel's folded. My main memories of that parade are the cold and Santa climbing up the side of Gimbel's on Market Street.
I was looking for 1960's Thanksgiving pics. Instead I found a really creepy balloon and a conspiracy theory connected to Thanksgiving.

It's just Wednesday...

All the years I lived there I never once watched the parade. (My loss.)

There's always next year!

Looks like it was a big hit!

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade drew its largest audience ever this year, according to NBCUniversal.

The 98th annual event amassed 31.3M viewers Thursday across linear and digital platforms, which is up 10% from last year’s 28.5M, the company said.

About 24M tuned in on NBC alone during the live telecast from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. That makes it the most-watched entertainment show on linear television since the 2020 Academy Awards on ABC.

Though NBCUniversal didn’t give specifics on the digital audience, the company did reveal that streaming hours on Peacock grew by 26% compared to last year’s parade.

“The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an event in which we take enormous pride, and it’s an absolute joy to know that there was a record number of people watching across both NBC and Peacock,” Jen Neal, Executive Vice President, Live Events and Specials, NBCU Entertainment, said in a statement. “The parade is a tradition like no other. Year after year, it’s the best way to kick off the holiday season, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it with our partners at Macy’s.”

The 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was hosted by Today Show personalities Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker. It featured 17 character balloons, 22 floats, 15 heritage and novelty balloons, 11 marching bands, and performances from a selection of music stars.

Yes, I haven't looked myself but I read somewhere that it's on Peacock.
