Trouble with a capital "T"

So who remembers the 90s?

Maybe it was the decade that you were born? Or maybe the decade before you were born, that you always wish you had been old enough to experience. Or maybe you did live through the 90s?...Alot of MoFos love 90s movies that's for sure! But I seemed to have missed out on watching movies that decade, I guess I was busy But now I'm catching up on all those great 90s movies I missed.

I hope to watch 100 1990s movies in prep for the upcoming Top 100 90s Movies countdown....stay tuned.

Decade before you were born lolllll hahahaha.

Btw could someone give a ruling on Blade Runner (Director's Cut) (1992)?
obvs the original is 80s.

At Play In the Fields of the Lord
(Hector Babenco, 1991)
IMDB link

Starting off my log of 1990s movies watched. I'm aiming for 100 movies. This is one that I'd never heard of until I found it in an advanced IMDB title search for movies made from 1990-1999. I was impressed! I wouldn't be surprised if this remains my favorite watch from the 90s.

A very special movie with a crummy title. I image people passed this movie by because they believe it's a Christian themed movie, it's not. A movie title can kill a movie and At Play In the Fields of the Lord was only released in 25 theaters before the studio pulled the plug on it. As a result it was not well known. Luckily with streaming, these days you can watch it on Fandago and AppleTV and other places as well.

Unlike so many movies that are cinematic roller coaster rides, At Play In the Fields of the Lord slowly unfolds a tale of indigenous people in the Brazilian jungles and how the encroachment of well meaning missionaries and western civilization ends up causing these gentle people of the jungle big problems. The movie was entirely shot in Brazil, that was so appreciated by me. It looks amazing.

I usually wouldn't quote someone else's review but Roger Ebert said everything I wanted to say:
...Roger Ebert, who had read the novel and believed the film is true to its themes, awarded the film 3 and a half out of 4 stars.

Ebert wrote, "Watching it, we are looking at a morality play about a world in which sincere people create unwitting mischief so that evil people can have their way. The movie essentially argues that all peoples have a right to worship their own gods without interference, but it goes further to observe that if your god lives in the land and the trees, then if we destroy your land, we kill your god. These messages are buried in the very fabric of the film, in the way it was shot, in its use of locations, and we are not told them, we absorb them."
I agree that this is a movie that requires one's full attention as it's subtle story telling. I rate the movie
I think it will be along time until I see such an intelligently filmed story.

You would have to ask the host of the 90s countdown, he's going to make the preliminary thread soon. Myself I'd say Blade Runner Final Cut shouldn't qualify as being made in the 90s.

I started 90's as 7 years old and ended as 17 years old. I started listening to popular music in 1993. By the end of 90's I was watching movies on TV and Cinema. 90's was awesome in popular culture.

100 films, huh? That’s great dedication, CR, for a movie decade I know is a bit past what you usually love

I don’t know if I will have/make much time for 90s films up to the countdown. But I’ve seen tons already so it shouldn’t be a problem at all. I can pretty much fill up a list with top tier flicks already haha

I’d agree with this assessment as well

1492: Conquest of Paradise
(Ridley Scott, 1992)
IMDB link

Ridley's take on Christopher Columbus' voyage and colonization in the new world. This was the story telling antithesis of At Play in the Fields of the Lord. This is heavy handed, Hollywood popcorn story telling. Now, I like a good 'popcorn movie' myself only this isn't the subject matter for a fun flick. Like many of Ridley's films this is visually good looking but the story telling is hap hazard and dumbed down to comic book style at times, especially this character who belonged in Robin Hood The actor Michael Wincott was good as a hyper evil baddie dressed in all black with matching long black hair and a devious look in his eyes, but it was all too cartoonish of a character for the subject matter.

I had to laugh at all the people who spit alka-seltzer foam out of their mouths as they were dying of battle wounds. Gosh that looked silly. Gérard Depardieu as Columbus, he looked the part I guess, but I could not understand half of his dialogue...he needed a dialogue couch on set.

One of the movies biggest problems is the historic revisionist where Columbus loves the natives and respects their ways and their gods. I guess that's why we need the evil dude in black armor to enslave them. This is one helluva a stupid movie.

100 would be possible only if we have a long watch period of 4 months. But I'm trying my best to catch stuff I haven't seen. I might do some rewatches but only if it's been decades since my last watch.

Would you say that's your favorite decade for popular culture stuff?

A couple films I like to toss out for the 90’s

Viva L’Amour
Your mileage may vary, as it’s slow cinema

The Ox
Sven Nykvist Steps out of the shadows of being known as Ingmar Bergmans cinematographer and directs a great film in his own right.

The Thief
Pavel Chukhray directed, son of the more famous Grigory Chukhray who’s best known for Ballad of a Soldier

In The Company of Men
Searing look at male toxicity in the business world and their attitude towards women

Ricki-0h: The Story of Ricky
Just a crazy martial arts splatter fest that doesn’t require a lot of thought behind it but is endlessly entertaining

My nr 1*

*unless I can have Blade Runner, then it's a toss up.

One of the reasons I really pushed for a 90’s redux was to include movies like Viva L’Amour. I’m hoping it not only makes the countdown, but actually ranks high.
I think we may get enough people to get on board with it.

A few others I’d like to recommend:

Eat Drink Man Woman
The Wedding Banquet
2 early Ang Lee films from Taiwan

Four Little Girls
Spike Lee’s heart breaking documentary about a church bombing that claimed the lives of four young girls, all black, in a racially motivated crime. Beware, contains some graphic scenes of their deaths.

Thanks Wylde for the recommendations. With two 'yes votes' for Viva L’Amour, I'll check it out. I do like slow cinema. One of the things I like to do is watch other people's ballot movies, as if I like them, I can include them on my own ballot which helps get them on the countdown. I'll research those other titles too and see what I think.

I probably don't have anything to add because my faves are all very well known and highly watched (Goodfellas, Braveheart, etc.).

Huh, 1990? I was 22 yrs old. I have seen a lot of films in the decade. I think that is when AMC started their Moviewatcher program. I remember seeing 8 films at the cinema that first week.

I know one of the films was Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford and Annette Benning. I would have to look at other films during that time to see what the rest were.

I found a site with the films that came out around Regarding Henry. They were

Robin Hood Prince of Theives
Dying Young
The Rocketeer
Terminator 2
Point Break
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
City Slickers
