Trouble with a capital "T"
lol @ totally 80s font..

I'm at a birthday right now, but when I come back I'm gonna spam this thread with recs..
Good call on the 80s font! I was hoping no one would notice *I just went with it as the colors popped.

I probably don't have anything to add because my faves are all very well known and highly watched (Goodfellas, Braveheart, etc.).
I've hardly seen anything from the 90s, though I did see Goodfellas and Braveheart.

"Buffalo '66" was made in the 90s
That was a really good film. I wish more MoFos would give it a watch as I thought it was very introspective and very personal film making.

Trouble with a capital "T"
Huh, 1990? I was 22 yrs old. I have seen a lot of films in the decade. I think that is when AMC started their Moviewatcher program. I remember seeing 8 films at the cinema that first week.

I know one of the films was Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford and Annette Benning. I would have to look at other films during that time to see what the rest were.
I was in my late 20s when the 90s started and my late 30s and about to get married when the 90s ended. I probably went on some dates to movies but I really don't remember what I watched. I didn't watch much TV then but I must seen something?

Decade before you were born lolllll hahahaha.

Btw could someone give a ruling on Blade Runner (Director's Cut) (1992)?
obvs the original is 80s.
That'll be a definite no - but that gives me something else to add to the rules I've been working on.

----------------

Movies I'd recommend adding to the watchlists (for any and all)

* Don't sleep on Kore-eda, he probably wouldn't like it, but also, you'd be missing out on Maborosi (slow cinema) and After Life (not slow)

* Whit Stillman's stylized but worth watching 90s efforts - My favorite is The Last Days of Disco, but both The Metropolitan and Barcelona are nifty as well (and Whit, would you make more movies, please, I miss you)

* Iran, I believe only 1 Iranian film made the 100 last time, my favorite A Moment of Innocence, and others by Makhmalbaf (Silence, Gabbeh) or his talented family (The Apple), did not.

* The Scent of Green Papaya (from the director of The Taste of Things (2023), if you've seen that, you'll know what to expect here as far as pacing and mood)

* Perfect Blue - disturbing but brilliant animation from Satoshi Kon

The Postman 1994
Haven't seen it since... probably the 90s, but I remember liking it a lot.

That was a really good film. I wish more MoFos would give it a watch as I thought it was very introspective and very personal film making.

Check out "Series Noire" (1979) - it gives me the same feel. I saw it a few years ago but totally independent and good. Patrick Dewaere was one of the best actors then, until he shot himself at such a young age.

Thinking of something to recommend you so I look to see what you haven't crossed off of the existing 90's list. Wow I think to myself, look at all these incredible films he hasn't seen. Oh wait, this is CR I'm thinking of here and he doesn't like those kinds of movies. I would say to look into the Three Colors Trilogy, all of them are excellent.

The trick is not minding
Speaking of Iran:*
The Mirror (Jafar Panahi)
I’m not as a big a fan of A Moment of Innocence as most are, but I would happily suggest this gem instead, which I felt was superior.

I second The Wrong Trousers, and add 2 other shorts:
Geri’s Game (Pixar)
A Close Shave (also Wallace and Geonit)

used to think the 90s were by far the worst decade but now a good chunk of my favourites are from then. really happy with the movies i currently have on my list and there's a ton of things i'm stoked to check out.

Trouble with a capital "T"

Chaplin (1992)
Director: Richard Attenborough

Good movie about the great Charles Chaplin. This easily could've been a 3 hour long movie and it still would've held my attention. Robert Downey Jr. makes a great Chaplin, he loses himself in the role and in that way the movie works well, I believed he was Chaplin. I don't have much to say, except I wish it was longer and that says alot.

90s movie: #3

You know that film we talked about?

I recommended to @Citizen Rules. I'm sure he will enjoy it.

Trouble with a capital "T"
I read all the post with recommendations up stream and made a list of 90s films to check out, thanks!
How many of these have you seen? I haven't seen them all
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls000064427/
That's helpful too, I've seen a lot of those but want to watch others on that list.

If it's the one I said I like to see I'm 'acquiring it now' Looks good and I'll give it a watch.

Ricki-0h: The Story of Ricky
Just a crazy martial arts splatter fest that doesn’t require a lot of thought behind it but is endlessly entertaining

That's a fun and extremely strange one.

"Ricki! Break these headstones!"

But you're not a true child of the 90's unless you know the movie from 'the Daily Show'.

A couple films I like to toss out for the 90’s

Viva L’Amour
Your mileage may vary, as it’s slow cinema
In terms of Tsai Ming-liang, do you have a noticeably stronger preference for Viva L'Amour over Rebels of the Neon God, since they're both eligible for this countdown?

I don't imagine any of the picks I'd throw out there are that unknown, but I guess might on the periphery of maybe people have heard of them but haven't seen them, so I guess this is a reminder they exist/are from that decade.
  • Flowers of Shanghai
  • Beau Travail
  • Taste of Cherry
  • Derek Jarman's Blue
  • Brighter Summer Day
  • Porco Rosso

Do I need to list the Kubrick, Lynch, Coens, Wong Kar Wai stuff from the 90s? I assume people know of them and if the output of those directors are their cup of tea or not, and if so they've probably seen those movies already (though if people only watched Chungking Express, then Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild are also worth checking out).

I love Regarding Henry. It's very likely to make my list.

The Rainmaker 1997 (Francis Ford Coppola)

The Rainmaker is on my rewatch list for the 90s Countdown. I saw it in the theater, and I remember that I loved it, but I don't remember much about the movie itself. I think it might have a good chance to make my list if I rewatch it.

These are some of my favorite 1990s movies that I would recommend:

While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Paradise (1991)
Heart and Souls (1993)
Ghost (1990)
Dave (1993)
The American President (1995)
Good Will Hunting (1997)

I also made a custom list of some of my favorite movies from the 1990s:

https://www.movieforums.com/lists/custom/502

(It's not in any ranked order. It's just sorted by year.)
