Today sounds like a good day for Batman Under the Red Hood.

Addendum; it sounded so much like it that I did it. I'm not sure what's next.

Mank (2020). And I'm enjoying it.

Nope. I was enjoying it. Until the ridiculous dialogue became too much. Everybody taking it in turn to add in a line like some kind of conversation can-can.
Come on, this is basic shit to get right.

Will give Poorer Things a try, which I think is the last one on my list I can find to view.

As ever, you are correct. Very meh.
I think that there's an interesting idea in there that
WARNING: spoilers below
this "transfer" process the aliens do would also carry over emotions like love or anxiety
, but it just doesn't go anywhere great.

The best element is the moment where you realize (BIG SPOILERS)
WARNING: spoilers below
that she's known for a while that he's an impostor because she saw the body in the cave. That's a great retrospective OHHHHHHH!!!! moment. But then it doesn't really advance from that point
.

It almost reminded me of Upstream Colour, which, though it barely had any plot at all, did seem to explore similar themes with a bit more nuance.

Interesting — I thought she assumed

he was dead
but it could be I wasn’t paying attention. I was very confused by some bits of it because to me,
WARNING: spoilers below
her decision to push him off the cliff seems completely demented and not really justified at all in the narrative, but also I would think that anyone would think he died after that…

Alas, I’m not rewatching that to see how it holds up.

Are you planning to watch Nightbitch? It was very entertaining seeing respectable girls at my favourite cinema struggle to say ‘bitch’ while welcoming people and checking tickets.

I think Upstream Colour is far stronger, though I haven't revisited it in a long time because of all Carruth's nonsense.

So there's a time-jump/flashback element. She

goes into the cave and sees the dead body of her boyfriend and realizes that he's an impostor, THEN she pushes him off of the cliff. We learn after she pushes him that she knew he was an alien/creature who took the shape of her boyfriend.

So we're meant to think she pushes him because she's nuts, but then later realize she was defending herself

I've only seen middling reviews of it, so wasn't planning to check it out. I also haven't read the book yet.

Yes, I recall your stance on that — fair enough. Strangely it has coloured my own perception of him too, though that isn’t usually the case for me.

Riiight. That makes a whole lot more sense.

Good for you. Don’t know about the book, but I was ridiculously upset by it. It’s just so… annoying! I literally cried out of sheer frustration and it definitely isn’t a film that deserved my tears. (I have no excuse, I’m not stressed at work, it was just the movie itself.)

Please, please give me a positive portrayal of motherhood one of these days, anyone. No cancer, no tragedy, just a happy mother.

I’ll wait.

Strange film. A good example of non-linear storytelling actually ruining all the tension. I understand the implication that we’ve seen it all before, so let’s turn it on its head, but surely not like this.
I do love the idea of them hanging out for what looks like 48 hours and not having sex.

LOL. I'm not sure that a happy mother would make for the most engaging film. Have you seen Parallel Mothers? I feel like that film qualifies in an interesting way.

Yes, that was a good one. I like most of what Almodóvar does.

No guarantee that it would be better, of course, but I feel a move away from ‘misery porn’ could only be for the best. Even the big budget stuff feels very trite with how few characters have genuinely great, fulfilling sex, genuinely love spending time with their kids, like their spouses etc. And if that’s supposed to reflect reality — well, yes, but that all does exist. Maybe I’m paying too much attention to it.
