New to NETFLIX Movies. My initial impressions. What are yours?

Overall, I am not impressed. With so many people talking about being "inclusive", That doesn't go for the variety of movies which may be found on NETFLIX.
I have seen some very good foreign films, but American films? Little to offer.
To make the situation even worse, NETFLIX is blatantly political. If I want to watch a movie for its politics, I'll seek one out. NETFLIX pushes it down my throat, which repels me from it rather than watch it as they would want. Movies are fine if they are about ideologies, but not when they are made to covertly introduce ideologies for the sake of politics. That's not entertainment, its more in line with propaganda.
I'll be cancelling my service.

These are polarizing times, and as such, cinema reflects that. The 70’s were no different in the era of Watergate and Vietnam.
I don’t feel it’s shoved down my throat, so much as cinema has been influenced by it.

Netflix appears to push movies that are in line with movies I'm already watching. Are you already watching this type of stuff you're getting suggestions for?

Also, I'm not sure Netflix cares what I watch, as long as I'm watching it through their service.

Netflix sucks. I canceled my service some while ago. They didn't have a lot of my favorite movies. Try Tubi TV. It's free. You can download their app in the app store.

Netflix sucks, I had it for awhile and there was only a few classics and foreign films on there. Now if someone likes body fluid and fart joke movies, Netflix is the place to go.

"In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions" 100% agree! It's the last resort when trying to find something to watch unless I want to start re-watching some tv shows. They have some decent movies but they are movies most people have already seen. Just a quick look at their top picks for me: Total Recall, Goodfellas, Clockwork Orange, Naked Gun, it goes on (I've already rated these!) and then all their original, crap movies. As for their politics, I don't care. I'm just glad they don't have a stranglehold on streaming like Blockbuster did with rentals. I wouldn't pay for it but I have family members who will.

My cousin gave me his password last week. I saw an Elvis documentary and by the next day, I guess he hadn't paid his bill.... It's back working today and kinda watching the Jerry Lee Lewis since it's going away soon..


Do you have anything to recommend to me? Any good movies from the 1930-70s? I've looked, and it seems like there is nothing for me (which is why I barely used it years ago when my sister gave me her password).

Netflix is not the place to go for classics.

I just went on JustWatch and restricted Netflix to movies made before 1977 and there are only 15 results.

Maybe some of their documentaries might interest you, like Remembering Gene Wilder or Julia's Stepping Stones?

I have rarely found anything exceptional on NF, but it generally works if I'm just looking for "something to watch". To me, it's the slightly better version of Amazon Prime, although I don't get free shipping on anything. It's pretty good, though not great, if your expectations are middling, you want to find something entertaining but not great, etc.

Totally fair. I was agreeing with your instinct that it's not a great place to look for stuff from the 30s-70s. Like I said, though, they do have some documentaries that might interest you.

I rely on Netflix mostly for TV shows rather than movies. Occasionally they put out a movie that I enjoy just enough to keep me subscribed. I try to keep myself subscribed to only 3-4 streaming services, and honestly I should probably drop Netflix.

Honestly, I find Tubi is an increasingly great place to find movies if you don’t mind ads.

If i ever do Netflix again it'll be for series, not movies. I loved 1 movie from it, Prisoners with Hugh Jackman.

Netflix pushing a political agenda? sure, if getting you to watch more shit is an agenda.

i don’t get this whole “corps are pushing agendas” hysteria. they’re only interest is more money. how is this not clear?

MAX has movies...Netflix you might be able to find some award stuff but generally speaking it's eiter B movies with A-List stars or award bait films that couldn't get distribution.

As for classics just buy them it's not worth the headache of trying to track them down and DVD's are cheap.

Too many streaming sites have spread them pretty thin. I remember back when I had Netflix and Hulu (when they hosted Criterion) and those two pretty much had you covered, for new and older pictures (I watched a bunch of Keaton's silent classics through the old mail delivery service)

But now both are very series focused, and I don't do series very much, I get sick and tired of them after a season or two. The days of subscribing year after year is over, now I use the service filter on my watchlists at Letterboxd, to see how much has accumulated at each place, then sign up for a month and get those cleared out. One month it might be Hulu, then MUBI, or Prime, just cycle through them. (Criterion I stick with the longest)

I just checked and I see I have collected a good bunch at Netflix, might be time to for another month (I really want to see Five Came Back (2017), and Maria's already streaming?)

Please don't hate me; I signed up for Netflix again because the kiddos wanted it. I figure I can use it too since why not I'm paying for it. They utilized it for some Power Rangers Dino Fury. If you have a problem with that, you can play in traffic. I really don't mind them watching it. It shows some interesting, albeit small, messages.

Like one episode, someone with Downs is helping her friend with an injury and also helps her Power Ranger cousin train for track, and the Power Ranger jumps to a conclusion, and then deeply regrets it when one-with-Downs' friend shows up in a wheelchair and her leg in a cast. Izzy apologizes to the Downs syndrome girl whose name I forgot and then everyone is happy. Don't jump to conclusions and also people should look out for each other and the Downs person shows that. Stuff like that.
