Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Cookie's Fortune
(Robert Altman 1999)

'Conflict arises in the small town of Holly Springs when an old woman's death causes a variety of reactions among family and friends.'

I've become a fan of Robert Altman's movies at least when he makes films like Cookie's Fortune. This is set up like some of other Altman's films as it's an ensemble cast of diverse personalities set in the small Mississippi town of Holly Springs. The movie is filmed on location in Holly Springs which effectively functions as another character in the movie. I liked the way Altman never rushes a scene but allows the moment to play out and linger long enough to feel like we're part of the story. I really enjoyed this.

I actually know where Holly Springs Mississippi is. It's right on the other side of the Tennessee line.

I have customers in that town.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Delirious
(Tom Mankiewicz 1991)

Delirious flopped when it came out, critics didn't like it and audiences staid away. But almost 35 years later and I say this movie deserves a second look. I thought this was funny and I loved the premise of a New York tv soap opera writer (John Candy) getting knocked in the head and waking up in his own vision of the soap he's been writing. Even better when he finds out he can write on his typewriter and change the story including making himself to be the hero in a power play for a secret weight reduction formula that the ultra rich and evil Hedison family wants to acquire at all cost! It's a comedy, it's a satire on the night time soaps that were popular at the time. It even has soap opera diva Emma Samms looking good too.

You need to see that movie then.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Sphere
(Barry Levinson 1998)

That image probably makes the sci-fi movie Sphere look way cooler than it is. Based on a Michael Crichton novel, I expected more. I blame the director as the movie as delivered turned out to be derivative of other well known sci-fi films. Just take the sphere shape and horror elements from Event Horizon combine them with a dangerous intelligence that communicates passive aggressively through the humans computer, ala 2001 and then throw in some stuff from The Abyss and Deepstar Six...and you get the idea for Sphere. I wouldn't mind all that but when the director has the actors responding to the giant alien ship and other stuff like they were casually shopping at Wallmart, then the movie loses any excitement and all believability. It gets sillier too towards the end of the movie. Most interesting thing was the helicopter pilot who was played by Huey Lewis of 80s music fame.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'

Paradise (1991)
Dir. Mary Agnes Donoghue

I liked this much more than I thought I would. I thought this might be like a Hallmark movie, sweet and sappy, but nope it wasn't. Paradise is a serious look at what happens to a married couple when their only child dies. When a couple loses a child it often destroys their relationship as the pain of their loss causes them to retreat in ways very much like what happened in the movie. When we meet Ben (Don Johnson) he's a jerk, he's full of anger and keeps people at bay by being bitter and in that way he has an 'anger shield' that protects him from future hurt.

When I seen this was written and directed by a woman I knew it had a good chance of being an intelligently told story that explored the inner psyche of people suffering from loss. I thought Don Johnson did a good job at playing a bitter man and at the same time reaching out to Willard (Elijah Wood) as he would've to his own son and in that way helping to heal himself and resolve his inner conflict. Melanie Griffith seemingly was the 'nice lady' but as the film progresses we see that she's frightened to feel anything, especially for her husband who she drives away as she's full of guilt believing that she was responsible for her son's death. She gives a good performance especially in the tense bedroom scene when she breaks down and tells her husband she's afraid to feel anything and needs to protect herself by feeling numb to the world, that was a strong scene and it rang true. The entire story arch of the couple to me is what powers the movie even though much of the scenes are focused on the two small kids.

The kids themselves are not just there to be cute, they're dealing with abandonment and self delusion with finally accepting the truth that their fathers are deadbeats and won't be in their lives. Thora Birch as the little girl was one heck of an actress. Solid acting by everyone in the movie.

I loved the shooting location in rural South Carolina. That's the reason I decided to watch this as I love movies set in out of the way places as the setting can add alot of character....Sorry this is so long, Paradise is one of the few movies that makes me think alot and hence I wrote a lot.

Thanks for choosing it for the 90s Group Watch, otherwise I'd never seen it. I will certainly keep it in mind for my ballot.

I agree with one of the words in that three-word review.

I agree with one of the words in that three-word review.
I'd probably agree, but I tried once and couldn't get into it, so I can't say for sure. That said, I am confident I know which it is and that I'd agree.

A River Runs Through It
(Robert Redford 1992)

Nice to look it but unfocused with ill defined characters and way too much voice over narration from Robert Redford. The on location Montana scenery and the fly fishing on breath taking forest rivers was the highlight. Brad Pitt breathed life into his character but the lead Craig Sheffer wasn't allowed to develop his character and so was more a place holder for the beautiful scenery.

A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Dir. Alfonso Arau

Nice to look at period piece movie about a returning WWII vet who returns home to his wife a woman who he hardly knew and discovers she's not the woman he thought she was. Keanu Reeves is the vet. Once he leaves his wife he meets a pregnant Mexican American woman who's wealthy family owns a huge vineyard in Napa Valley California. The Spanish-Italian actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón is the unmarried pregnant woman returning home to a strict family, fearing the worse from her very stern father. She bumps into the vet on a bus and after getting to know each other he offers to accompany the young woman to her family's vineyard estate, pretending to be her husband. But only for one day at which time he will leave, making it appear that the husband has left the young woman.

The film has a great setting and some solid acting from Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Giancarlo Giannini who plays her father...and from veteran actor Anthony Quinn who plays the kindly grandfather. Keanu Reeves well is more or less himself. The story can be cliched at times and a bit overly wrought but still enjoyable as long as one doesn't look for perfection here.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
Arizona Dream (1993)
Dir. Emir Kusturica

So many great images in this indie surrealist dark comedy to choose just one. Stand out performances by the entire cast (Johnny Deep, Faye Dunaway, Jerry Lewis and Lili Taylor). Fascinating direction & script from Serbian direction Emir Kusturica. I'm not sure what I just watched but I'm impressed!

I haven't gotten to that one yet, but I'd also recommend Time of the Gypsies (it's from the 80's though) and Underground. With the latter film, I was just as mind blown as I was baffled by what I had watched. It will likely make my ballot.
