What does “a handle of Jack Daniels” mean?
A big bottle of liquor with a handle on the side. I'm not sure if Jack even comes in bottles that big, really. It was just the first booze I thought of for the joke.

Thx!

You ready? You look ready.
handle = 1.75 liters. so 0.25 liters short of a great time

I was thinking about your challenge, I guess it would be called?, and I wondered about work expenses and if my gray area would cause a muddle. I make films although not really professionally yet, although I work alone, and I need a couple of things for my next shoot, and I don't know if I'll have the money until February. Should I, since I haven't a deadline, just wait until March? It's kind of a professional expense because I kind of do it professionally, I do get paid a bit, but I don't know if it counts as "essential" for February because there's no deadline.

I won't spend money else wise, except maybe if the kiddos need something, than what I already planned, namely monthly expenses. I just have a film project that's getting close to being ready for production so I'm unsure what parameters to follow.

It's that time of year again...

I will be using this thread to track my progress, and hopefully this year I can avoid buying a car during No-Spend February!
It's been five days without a response so I thought I'd see if causing alert would grab your attention. Do semi-professional non-deadline film-related purchases count as non-essential and I should wait until March to get the film project props? Thinking about it, I might have a deadline because I don't know when, or if, I'll have sinus surgery, and I rather would prefer to get the project shot before the operation because then I don't wait as long.

Remember, this is just an exercise to really drill down in your finances to look for places to improve. I think spending on stuff like you mention is really up to you. If you film is of great importance for artistic expression, go for it. But mark down what you spent and write it down as a non-essential so you can at least keep track.

You can be as fervent (or not) about all this as you want.

Ah okay. So it's basically up to our discretion on whether it's something we "absolutely need" or if it's just a fun thing that we want to pass the time or whatever. I definitely don't need to buy more movies and video games. I do want to see if I can change spending habits because I'm really bad at being frugal and I have no need to spend money on random things.

Good luck! 8 Days and counting until we get started...

Snickers with Pecans sounds fabulous!

I've heard from multiple people that it takes about three weeks to change a habit, so if I can do this, maybe the habit of freely spending money will change. I'd be more than happy if that happens. I have no idea what I'd do with what I save if I do do that. That's actually not true; I have one idea. It'd take a lot of planning though.

Holy crap! I know what to do with Frugal February! If I can change my spending habits with it, I can get myself what I've wanted for decades for my birthday next year. Yeah! Awesome! I'm not going to spend any money until October when I buy it. I just realized that certain people would try to shoot down my idea... Eh oh well! They'd probably get all mad that I made a decision for myself and wouldn't be home. Sometimes you just have to do something for yourself.

I had an idea to solidify the viability of my big goal for this, so I will make a No-Spend February through October work. Thank you for the good idea. I will have to spend some money on less-essential things hither and thither, what with having kids, which is fine. My big-ticket purchase will still happen. I just have to be exceptionally frugal and not succumb to any sort of video game spending temptation.

Just a couple days out now, folks!

Here is a free resource to print out tracker sheets and the like.

Almost time!!!

I found a savings tracker on that site you linked. I kind of took your idea and ran with it and made it something else. It's fine; maybe this is the spark I needed to make my travel dreams a reality. I really don't need another fifteen hundred video games. Traveling abroad would be a lot of fun though.

Yes! Glad to hear this. Let me know what sort of cool stuff you come up with; I am always looking for new ideas to weave into NSF.

The Adventure Starts Here!
Ya know, I find it interesting that this is happening in February... with Valentine's Day smack dab in the middle of the month. Are you trying to get out of courting your missus, Seds?

Also, I might have to fudge on ONE item in February. I have been scouting out a new guinea pig (I've been without pets for nearly two years now, ugh), but I don't think I'll be able to get everything set up in time to get a new piggy by Friday. So, the actual guinea pig might end up being a February purchase. Since I intend to get said piggy from an animal shelter as a rescue, though, I will allow myself this exception as a good deed done that just happens to involve a donation to the shelter.

I told two of my mental health people about No-Spend February, which I call Frugal February because I like alliteration, and what my goal with it is. This year will probably be a one-time thing. Ooh maybe it doesn't have to be. Let's go on holiday every two years with Frugal February frequently and see parts of the world. One year to save, and one year to go, and then repeat. Hey that'd be fun. Let's see how the first one goes before committing too much to it though. I am determined to go this time at least.
