Tagging people

There is a chance I am doing this wrong but is there a way of tagging people without going to the advanced post view, clicking the mention icon and typing their username properly?


There are forums out there in which typing @ and characters after it will pop up a small modal window with usernames that make the process much easier.



PS. I am aware the implementation of this is much harder than it sounds as some javascript is required to make it work.

Yes to using the @, no to the modal. Also the @ will only work if the username has no line breaks or special characters.

Yeah, unfortunately the forum software is very old and the mentions are a slightly less-old plugin that's not supported. Which means it's not something I wrote myself. I modified it enough to work pretty well here but expanding its functionality much would be a big lift, sadly.

Yeah I figured as much. Wrapping in '@' doesn't work in circumventing the whitespace and special character limitation?
