Growing up with first the book then the radio series I was a little dubious about how good or “true to the book/radio series” the movie would be. However as the opening credits my cynical apprehension began to subside ( I mean who could resist singing dolphins?!?!)
I would suggest that people who enjoy British comedy see this film, written by a brit and directed by one the comedy that makes the Book and now the movie has remained charming and not in you face.

Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) lives in an average cottage in the English countryside, he wakes up one morning to find that there are plans for his house to be demolished for a Motorway). He is whisked away by friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def) and taken on a inter galactic journey that is not only funny but compelling.

Yet with a T.V mini-series there was a nagging feeling that it had all been done before. Unfortunately it seems that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is one of those texts that have been engulfed by the movie making machine. As a subsequence the true arbitrary nature of Adams masterpiece was somewhat lost as the directors seem to have tried to give it a more mainstream appeal.

The casting is also excellent for example Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent (when I read the books I always pictured a really average type and so the average, middle aged martin freeman was the perfect choice). The voice of Alan Rickman for Marvin is better still; he does that sullen, manic depressed voice so well.

People have criticised the use of CGI and other graphics in this film. Personally I didn’t find their use to be too in you face, in fact I admire Jennings for his use, it makes the film so much realistic then if it had been filmed with minimum use. Plus CGI has become such an inherent tool for modern movie making and media that it is about time that people just accepted it!!

Jennings as managed to make a movie that is hybrid of all genres (the result of which is almost the perfect movie). The casting first-rate and the humour gentle. But after the test trans-media jaunt I think it is about time that we moved away from the works of the masterful Douglas Adams, before his masterpiece losses it appeal.

I won't except it. Let's fight about it over the internet like cool folks. Why don't I like it? Well, no matter how real it looks it's not real. Even though the aliens from the movie Alien weren't anything more than really cool lookin' trash bags, I thought it was mo' den' bad ass. If they would have been CGI I would have been like, of yeah, it's just a movie. Trash bags are real, polygons aren't. I've got another example. In the movie Boogeyman when they flashed the guy with paint on his face it was pretty freakin' scary. Like the painted face flashes in The Exorcist. Scary sh*t. But when Boogeyman went to the CGI ghost at the end I started to cry. Not because I was scared, but because it was CGI and looked like crap. Lets fight.

In the same way as the fabled Suticat, who likes the same movies as I do? (only with a flatter stomach and slightly more hair)

Talking about CGI... I saw a trailer of the new xXx movie. Is it meant to look ridiculous?

Yeah I think that was what they are going for; ridiculous story, ridiculous acting, ridiculous CGI and stupid amounts of action. OK I'll admit I do like the occasional action movie but with this many pitfalls...........go AWAY XXX-2 nobody likes you .

Nice review btw and I personally liked the movie, as posted in the hitch-hikers thread.

I thought the CGI worked pretty well in "Hitchhiker's Guide" but, on the other hand, CGI made a mess of the last James Bond movie, "Die Another Day". I mean, the special effects in that movie were so bad, that they ruined what might have otherwise been a half-decent flick.

I hear that. With a movie like this one it makes sense. I just won't except it due to the fact that it's mo' monay' in the bizzank' and makes it easier for the director, producer, whoever. Excellent use of the izzle's by the way.

Took me a while to figure out what this thread was about, maybe post the name of the film you are reviewing as the review title, instead of an obscure in-joke. Once titled correctly, the review can then be tagged and accessed more easily by others.

Well to be honest i am not all that phased by the use of CGI the only time i can't stand it, is when in movies like xXx2 it is so over the top and in your face that your entire movie watching experience is lost. but when it is used to bring the film more to life or seem more realistic then its a great modern tool. It is also like all other tools it has to be used in moderation unless you are an absolute master of its use. but why should it be accepted, well its like any other artistic tool, just think if painters didn't accept acrylic paint would we have any of the master pieces of our time? NO. if the movie industry hadn't excepted coulour into movies then we would probably still have to watch movies in black and white (and wouldn't that just go off). so you see my friend if we just except CGI then there is a very good chance that movies will only just get better (cross fingers).

No, only Ice Cube is meant to look ridiculous with that constant mean look on his face. He needs a good bitch slap.
