Growing up with first the book then the radio series I was a little dubious about how good or “true to the book/radio series” the movie would be. However as the opening credits my cynical apprehension began to subside ( I mean who could resist singing dolphins?!?!)
I would suggest that people who enjoy British comedy see this film, written by a brit and directed by one the comedy that makes the Book and now the movie has remained charming and not in you face.
Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) lives in an average cottage in the English countryside, he wakes up one morning to find that there are plans for his house to be demolished for a Motorway). He is whisked away by friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def) and taken on a inter galactic journey that is not only funny but compelling.
Yet with a T.V mini-series there was a nagging feeling that it had all been done before. Unfortunately it seems that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is one of those texts that have been engulfed by the movie making machine. As a subsequence the true arbitrary nature of Adams masterpiece was somewhat lost as the directors seem to have tried to give it a more mainstream appeal.
The casting is also excellent for example Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent (when I read the books I always pictured a really average type and so the average, middle aged martin freeman was the perfect choice). The voice of Alan Rickman for Marvin is better still; he does that sullen, manic depressed voice so well.
People have criticised the use of CGI and other graphics in this film. Personally I didn’t find their use to be too in you face, in fact I admire Jennings for his use, it makes the film so much realistic then if it had been filmed with minimum use. Plus CGI has become such an inherent tool for modern movie making and media that it is about time that people just accepted it!!
Jennings as managed to make a movie that is hybrid of all genres (the result of which is almost the perfect movie). The casting first-rate and the humour gentle. But after the test trans-media jaunt I think it is about time that we moved away from the works of the masterful Douglas Adams, before his masterpiece losses it appeal.
