I like the set-up of
Dressed to Kill, and the museum to the elevator is so very well done, but the third act is just so out there and ridiculous I can't go with it.
The problem I have with
Dressed to Kill is the same problem I have with most of DePalma's early work: he was soooooooo in ode to Hitchcock mode that I don't feel he was bringing enough interesting to the screen besides that fetish.
Carrie is less so because its from Stephen King and
Phantom of the Paradise is its own little thing (and a heck of a lot of campy fun), but
Blow Out is the first one I feel where he really made it Hitchcockian (with a couple doses of Antonioni and Coppola too) but was able to tone it down enough and spin it into something new and his own. But you look at
Sisters, Dressed to Kill, Body Double, The Fury and most obviously
Obsession, they are just too damn mired in hommage. For me it's just Hitch with **** in it, but not done nearly as well or as iconically as the works from the Master he was aping.
But
Blow Out....man, that's a damn good flick (and the amazing element not yet mentioned is John Lithgow as the super creepy psychopath).
