Gladiator 2

I will see this but I'm really excited for the new show on Peacock, Those About To Die.

Also there are many parallels between the original Gladiator movie an The Fall of The Roman Empire (1964).

Gladiator (2000) is one of my favorite English speaking films.

Ok, well anything about Ancient Rome works for me.

this is going to be so bad, but I am certainly going to watch it
Agreed. Just watched the trailer and was not impressed at all. The original Gladiator was one of my favorite films. Definitely Top 50 material. But this sequel looks mediocre at best. The trailer was very unimpressive. But, as the above poster said, I'll probably end up watching it anyways.

The Guy Who Sees Movies
Hear hear... last thing we need is Gladiator 2.
The least they could do is to make it Gladiator II.

I watched the trailer and, at least, it seems like it should look good. I'm always good with some ancient Roman buildings, bloodthirsty crowds and demented aristocracy. It reminds me of just how much better humans are now.

Or, then again, maybe not.

The Guy Who Sees Movies
Whew. The world of Latin is safe again.

The more urgent threat will be whether Rome is OK. The track record on Roman movies isn't all that good.

Reactions always tend to be overwhelmingly positive from people who get to see it for free well in advance of release (these folks want to keep getting invited to advance showings)

that's true. you see that at film festivals where every movie is great and gets a standing ovation.

I'm now thinking this will get nominated for best picture.
Do you think Gladiator could beat Anora for BP!?

Do you think Gladiator could beat Anora for BP!?
No, I don't think so. In my mind, Gladiator 2 is around #9 in the best picture race and it still could miss the nomination. Anora is #1. The only movies that I think might be able to beat Anora for best picture could be The Brutalist or maybe Sing Sing, if it picks up enough momentum. I could see The Brutalist winning DGA and best director at the Oscars. Sing Sing could possibly win SAG ensemble and maybe win supporting actor at the Oscars. What do you think has the best shot at winning?

The Oscars are just a popularity contest, really.

Beyond mere artistic merit, a movie's chances usually lie with a combination of commercial success, good rapport with Academy members, a splashy FYC campaign,
and no bad PR (if an actor associated with one of the movies says something awful during the campaign, it's over for the movie).

That's true, although it is fun to speculate/guess/predict what will get nominated or win.

Maybe to some extent, but I also don't want to help legitimise decisions that are usually more about popularity than about actual artistic merit

Joseph Quinn getting singled out as a standout performance makes me very happy. The kid was royally snubbed for Stranger Things.

Seeing this on Tuesday and really don’t know what to expect.

I started out having no interest whatsoever honestly, but the more I hear about it the more my interest rises just a little bit.

Let me know your thoughts on it.

I'm still unsure about it, being a fan of the first film.

will you re-watch gladiator before watching this?
I didn’t plan on it but maybe.

Sometimes a rewatch of the original before a follow-up will be ideal. But sometimes I also feel like it’s better to go in without the rewatch and see if the new one can somehow reignite your thoughts and feelings of the first one.

And since this new one isn’t exactly deeply connected to the first, I trust my memory of the first well enough to not be needing the rewatch, I think.

I have decided to re-watch it. Might do it this week. I have only seen it once and wonder if it will be as good as I remember it.
