The 2024 MoFo Film Awards - Nominations

Tools

The Annual MoFo Film Awards are back again!
The deadline for submitting your nominations is March 21st.

What is this?
Formerly hosted by TheUsualSuspect, the MoFo Film Awards are pretty much our version of the Oscars. The categories differ slightly, and even include places to vent about your least favourite film or biggest disappointment of the year. Once I've collected your nominations, I'll reveal the finalists in another thread, where we'll have one month to vote for the winners.

How does it work?
For each category, you're able to select up to 5 films, people, or scenes to nominate (whichever is relevant). These choices are ranked, so your #1 choice will receive 5 points, #2 will receive 4 points, and so on. You do not need to make 5 selections if you don't want to, and your #1 choice will still be worth the full 5 points if you submit a partial ballot. Make sure to PM your nominations to me before the deadline.

Should I keep what I'm nominating a secret?
I do not recommend posting your final ballot in the thread, however unlike the Countdowns and Hall of Fames, talking about how you plan to vote will not cause your nominations to be disqualified. Feel free to post WIP shortlists, or to campaign for specific films or performances.

Do short films or TV series qualify?
You may nominate short films, but TV series are not eligible for the Film Awards.

Some films have conflicting release date information online. How do I know if a film is eligible for these awards?
Any "festival films" that were only shown in places such as the Toronto or Berlin International Film Festivals during 2023, but not given a wide theatrical release until 2024 are automatically eligible, since the majority of us are unable to see them during their initial festival window. Below you'll find a list of notable films with hybrid release dates, and feel free to suggest additions. If a film has conflicting information online, but is not a festival film, its eligibility will be open for discussion.

The Bikeriders (Dir. Jeff Nichols)

The rest of this post is just some information for anyone curious. I'm not going to list all the previous winners for every category, but since Suspect always kept track of the two major ones, I'll continue that tradition. For anyone who is new to the forum and would like to see how the previous nominations and awards threads were handled, there's links to a few of those as well.

A few notes: As per feedback from last year, a few overlapping categories have been combined, and a new "Best Horror Film" category has been added as well. I also changed the layout slightly, so that all performances were together, instead of "Breakout Performance" and "Ensemble Cast" being farther down the list for no reason.

Sorry, I might be blind, but I'm not seeing the deadline to submit Nominations by. When is the last date to send Nominations?
Under the pic.. The deadline for submitting your nominations is March 21st.

Sorry, I might be blind, but I'm not seeing the deadline to submit Nominations by. When is the last date to send Nominations?
It's March 21st. It's at the top of the first post, but might be easy to miss. Perhaps I'll try to make it more bold?

2023-2024:
Strange Darling
Hit Man
Cold Meat
The Last Stop in Yuma County
Late Night With The Devil
I've added all these to that post as well. Thanks for reminding me about Strange Darling and Late Night with the Devil by the way! I saw both of those, but hadn't included it in my personal seen list since I was only looking at what Letterboxd said I saw from last year.

Ooh nice, I was looking for an excuse to watch some more '24 stuff... will definitely participate.

Some FYCs for the time being...

Josh O'Conner, Challengers (lead actor)

Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong in The Apprentice (Lead and Sup. actor)

Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner in Strange Darling (Lead actor and actress)

Lars Eidinger and Lilith Stangenberg in Sterben (Lead actor and supporting actress)

A Different Man for screenplay

Nosferatu for all the techs

Woohoo!

Some more 2023 (or 2022!) festival releases that became available in 2024:

Hundreds of Beavers
Irena's Vow
Self Reliance
Boy Kills World
His Three Daughters
Wicked Little Letters
It's Only Life After All

Unfortunately, my favorite new documentary, Eternal Spring, appears to have become available online late in 2023.

For Your Consideration

Actor/Actress (supporting)

Jocelin Donahue, The Last Stop in Yuma County

Cailee Spaeny, Alien: Romulus
Margaret Qualley, The Substance
Aurora Ribero, The Shadow Strays

Mads Mikkelsen, The Promised Land
Michael Keaton, Knox Goes Away
Lee Byung-hun, Concrete Utopia
Ryan Gosling, The Fall Guy

Some more 2023 (or 2022!) festival releases that became available in 2024:

Hundreds of Beavers
Irena's Vow
Self Reliance
Boy Kills World
His Three Daughters
Wicked Little Letters
It's Only Life After All
I've added all these! Hundreds of Beavers taking 3 years to become widely available is kinda crazy.

I almost forgot about Boy Kills World. That may be a top contender for the "Mixed Bag" category for me.

Mads Mikkelsen, The Promised Land
I actually voted for him in this last year, but he didn't make the ballot. Will definitely add that film to the 2023/2024 ones in the first post while it's on my mind again.

Concrete Utopia too, now that you mention it. Haven't seen that one yet, but it's on my watch list.

Can we nominate short films in some categories if we want, or only feature films?
I don't see why not. Perhaps the Documentary and Animated Film categories might even see a boost in nominations by officially allowing shorts?

I'll add that to the first post. I might take a look at the Q&As that I've copied and pasted from the last couple years as well to see if any of that info can be streamlined, so there's not too much text there.

I've updated the first post so that there's less text up-front. I kept only the most important questions visible, while the rest are in a collapsible section at the bottom. I might do something to make the other info posts more visibly appealing later as well, though I'm not sure what, other than making a couple header images.

In the meantime: please post your 2024 recs! Especially for foreign films because I feel like I haven't seen many films this past year.
