Doomsday (2008) –
The violence is tacky and Rhona Mitra’s lips need to lay off the kettle bells. I should like it, being a shameless rip of Escape from New York and MM2. I was hyped when it came out. I was disappointed. With adjusted expectations, I’m still disappointed.

Backcountry (2014) –
Pretty dull characters, but nice woodland scenery and some genuinely unsettling content. Holy sh*t, that scene was intense. Especially the aftermath.

These are the Damned (1963) –
Some characters in the middle of a dispute stumble upon a hidden experiment involving quarantined children. The characters are unique, and it has a very dry atmosphere (a little boring though).

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) –
One of the most enjoyable flicks in the series. Story driven, good characters, cool hippie setting, and a villain that got the Brazil facelift.

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) –
Next Gen meets early 2000’s shiny leather edginess. One of the less interesting stories from the ST film universe, and I thought the action was sort of akin to Star Wars Ep 1 (pew pew pew).

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) -



This had a huge potential and I can't even say it didn't use it. It just didn't use it the way I wanted it to. It starts wonderfully with a soldierly threesome and the scenes of soldiers coming home (especially the sailor part is moving), but then it somehow loses its impetus and turns into your usual melodrama fare. I like how this melodramatic plot still manages to sneak in some social observations and some scenes ring out quite heavily, but the overall experience is only good.

Visages d'enfants [Faces of Children] (1925) -



Maybe it's been awhile since I saw some truly great silent movie, but this one felt quite modern to me. I thought it's from 1928, or 1929, not 1925. Even though I had this feeling of modernity to this film, I couldn't put my finger on what makes me feel this way, especially when I recalled Abel Gance and his technical masterpiece La roue made two years earlier. All of this aside, this is a very good film.

Yet another proof that while I dislike Ford's colour movies, I absolutely love his black'n'white flicks! Mr. Smith Goes to the Wild West!!!

Un Amleto di meno [One Hamlet Less] (1973) -



Not a masterpiece Our Lady of the Turks is, but Bene's style is still prevalent and implodes Shakespeare! The costumes and sets are absolutely astounding. I wish Bene would whisper to my ear every night.

Tokyo Strangler (2006) -



I already forgot half of the movie, but it's a decent take on thriller pinku and man, Japanese are really stepping up their censorship game!

I love Soavi, but this is his worst so far! He takes the Argento/Fulci route here and provides a lot of ideas, great cinematography and... zero sense.

Gritty, brutal, uncompromising! Lustig in his element.

The perfect bridge between giallo and slasher! So many scenes surprised me. Great atmosphere and style! THAT ENDING CRUSHED MY BALLS!

Ultimo mondo cannibale [Jungle Holocaust] (1977) -



Survival horror adventure for the whole family! Not as gory as Cannibal Holocaust and focused more on the survival aspect. Massimo Foschi was so good!

曖昧 [Ambiguous] (2003) -



Second best modern pinku I've seen! Very nihilistic!

I really liked this too. The 'USB' and Downfall bits got audible laughter from me, and I'll always have a nostalgic soft spot for Laibach.

Watched this year - 64 (watched some in April as well i'm only counting til the end of March)

Out of the Past and Ox Bow are high on my watchlist.

Both are good. Out of the Past had a few things in the first half hour or so that bothered me but for the most part it was good stuff. Ox-Bow is very short and pretty simple and i felt a tad heavy handed, it's thoroughly enjoyable though and brings up a few important points.

Every bit as poignant and beautiful as I expected. I am searching for more words, but have yet to find them.



The Fantastic Mr.Fox

Finally got my kids to watch this with me. Gets better every time. My 8 year old has watched it twice since. Yay me, dad of the year.

Jackie:

Technically excellent but I have to use the B word: Bit Boring.

Chunking Express:

I have the Kar-Wai bug. My second film of his, my second 4.5. His movies are an absolute experience. Cinematography, music, and mood are perfect. Sign of a great film, you want to see it again almost immediately.



Elle:

This film put me in mind of Haneke so much. Not what I was expecting from a Verhoven film. Really well written and well shot with some great moments. I had a very hard time nailing down motivations and themes, so that lessened the experience for me quite a bit.

Ghost In The Shell:

What is this movie even trying to be? Looks good.

Patterson:

Kind of the opposite of Elle. This hit all my pleasure points thematically but lacked a bit in the entertainment department. Good film, but I was expecting greatness from word of mouth.

Toni Erdmann:

For a film with an in your face main character and some outrageous scenes this film is surprisingly subtle. A slow burn that is never laugh out loud funny but always humorous. Before you know it it has strung two or three very engaging scenes together and you're thinking I like this film. Not in a hurry to revisit but I enjoyed it and will probably reference it quite a bit.
