I have the same problem with Spanish ones. I try to find lists on the internet but they consist almost entirely of films I never watch: neo-realist, world war 2, horror, and those pathetic edge-fests from the 60's (you know what I'm talking about). I can see that Fellini's films are objectively good but they never clicked with me for some reason. The only ones that sort of did were Allegro non Troppo and a handful of spaghetti westerns.
The one thing I'm always looking for in a film is that it deals with universal themes, e.g. Liberty Valance and virtue, The Return and miscommunication with God, H-8 and the unfairness of death, etc. Other than that, it can be as light or dark, as high-brow or low-brow as it wants.
