Across the Universe (2007)

I totally dug that strawberry art! Visually that was one of my favorite scenes. If I ever get back into serious photography I'm going to make my own strawberry art and photograph it and enter into a photo competition.

I was impressed by two of the most amazing musical numbers in the movie, Come Together with the great Joe Cocker & Martin Luther singing one of my favorite Beatles songs...I loved the urban setting and pacing. This one gave me goose bumps, it was that good. The other awesome number was the visually creative I Want You. Loved how that was tied in Max's storyline of being drafted. The choices for that number were surrealistically tense and conveyed the horror of being drafted against one's will to fight and possible die in a war no one wanted.

I always liked the Beatles songs and Bono nailed I Am The Walrus, damn good cover. But with 33 songs in a 2hour+ movie it was just too many and the songs got in the way. So many of the songs were staged poorly with the actors acting out the lyrics and too me that felt too on the nose, missing the creativity mark. I really didn't like the actors singing directly into the camera lens over and over. That reminded me of the early days of MTV. I had a hard time staying focused and I believe that's because there wasn't enough story with all those songs. It felt like a really great movie idea that needed sharper focus on what it was doing.
LOVED this movie...a link to my review:

Just finished rewatching Across the Universe. This was a mixed experience for me, as I feel the film is somewhat uneven. The songs are great, of course. I really liked the musical performances in the film and some of the sequences are fantastic. I loved Let It Be and I Want To Hold Your Hand. The story was the weakest part for me. I felt that Jim Sturgess was miscast. I didn't care for his acting and I didn't find his character interesting. The film is also at least 20 minutes too long. If I were to rate just the musical sequences, it would be an 8 or 9/10. If I were to rate the story and characters without the music, it would likely be a 5 or maybe a 6. Overall, I rate the film a 7/10, which equals

Gideon what was your favorite musical numbers in the movie?
If I remember correctly, I loved the cheerleader singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", loved Joe Cocker on "Come Together", I agree that Bono nailed "I am the Walrus", and I can't remember the name of the song, but the production number where Lucy's boyfriend gets drafted all the soldiers are in their underwear.

Interesting as Jim Sturgess 'Jude' was my favorite actor and the only one I connected to. I thought Evan Rachel Wood 'Lucy' was forgettable and Joe Anderson 'Max' played it too big.

'Bono I Am The Walrus', Definitely a highlight that I forgot to mention
What did you think of I Want You and Come Together musical numbers?

Love that one, the song is I Want You She's So Heavy. Here's that number

and Come Together musical number

What did you think of I Want You and Come Together musical numbers?
I didn’t like the I Want You one to be honest. Remind me the context of Come Together. Seems like I thought it was fine, but again, I like that song quite a bit.

The music carried most of the numbers fine it’s the in between stuff that I thought was pretty rough. And none of it really did much for me visually. End credits were probably my favorite visual.

I think we cross posted so you probably already seen that video I posted of the Come Together number, which was one with Jo Jo (Martin Luther) walking around the urban streets.

Yeah, sorry I am not watching a three hour long musical from the 1970s.
You know why? Cos you are a bitch, man... A la-de-la-de-la-de-la-de-la-de-laaaa...

Well, I watched it.

I'm seriously starting to question my decision not to just stick with only rewatches for this countdown like I had originally intended.

Across the Universe
(Julie Taymor, 2007)

I saw this nominated in the Group Watch thread and thought I'd give it a shot. After all, it was nominated by someone who also isn't generally a fan of musicals and I don't think I've ever seen a jukebox musical so I thought that perhaps my familiarity with a lot of the songs would help make it more bearable, even though I'm not really a Beatles fan.

It didn't. I actually found the songs that I didn't know to be more tolerable than the others. Anytime they'd break out into a song I'm familiar with all I could think about was how much I'd rather be listening to the original song. The music also didn't seem to serve any real purpose except to make an already flimsy story feel super padded, overlong, and gimmicky. Making things worse were the overabundance of supporting characters and side stories. Prudence in particular seemed to exist only to excuse the inclusion of "Dear Prudence" and the "She came in through the bathroom window" line, and to serve as a half-assed attempt at greater racial diversity in its cast. Though having said that, I am giving this a slightly higher rating than the other Group Watch nominations I've seen if only because I did kind of like Sadie and Jo-Jo's story. Actually, they were the only characters that I liked - with main character Jude being my least favorite of all.

I was optimistic going into this, but I had mentally checked out about the time that Bono made his appearance.

I just finished Across the Universe, but it didn't do much for me. As much as I love the Beatles, I couldn't stand the covers of their music in this film, with almost no exceptions. The choices to modernize their songs, include some distractingly obvious auto tune throughout a handful of the musical sequences, fill them with some horribly dated CGI, and to insert cringe-inducing scenes of the characters acting out certain lyrics turned me off real quick. The covers from Dana Fuchs and Martin McCoy were the least insufferable since their singing talents were the strongest from the group, but for the most part, the film just had me wishing I was listening to the original songs instead. Aside from the music, the characters were mostly bland from start to finish to the point it frequently seemed like the film wasn't going anywhere. Even the attempts to develop them didn't do much for me either. Lucy and Jude's romance certainly doesn't bring anything new to the table, Max's anxieties over being drafted, though this had quite a bit of potential, only shone through in a couple points of the film, while Sadie, Jo-Jo, and Prudence seemed to mostly disappear from the film throughout large stretches of it. As a whole, I was barely left with anything to grasp onto. It was just a handful of mostly bland and uninteresting characters wrapped up in a constant barrage of awful musical sequences.

Current candidates to host the next round: edarsenal and Gideon58

You guys have about 24 more hours to watch the film.

I don't care what anyone else says, getting over 1 popcorn from Miss Vicky makes the nomination a smashing success.
I would say anything getting over 1/2 popcorn is remarkable!

It's going to take a while for me to catch up with this thread, but I'll use the nominations list at the beginning of the thread to give my quick thoughts on the movies that have already been nominated.

Nominations:
Curly Top (1935, Irving Cummings)
Nominated By: Allaby
I've seen several Shirley Temple movies over the years, but I'm not much of a fan of her movies. I know that most people think she's an adorable little girl, but I find her to be very annoying.

The Pajama Game (1957, George Abbott and Stanley Donen)
Nominated By: Citizen Rules
The Pajama Game is one of my favorite movies, and is likely to be a lock for my list.

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam)
Nominated By: seanc
I'm not a fan of Mopnty Python, but I watched Monty Python's The Meaning of Life for one of the MoFo countdowns or HoFs a while back. While I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would, it's just not my cup of tea.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986, Frank Oz)
Nominated By: Thursday Next
I've seen both versions of Little Shop of Horrors, and they're both enjoyable movies, but this is not likely to make my list. (If I remember correctly, the original version wasn't a musical.)

Charlotte's Web (1973, Charles A. Nichols and Iwao Takamoto)
Nominated By: Miss Vicky
I watched Charlotte's Web for the Animations countdown, and remember that I liked it more than I thought I would, but I don't remember much about the movie. I'll rewatch it for this countdown, but it's not likely to make my list.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum (1966, Richard Lester)
Nominated By: stillmellow
I've seen A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum a few times, and it's a fun movie, but it doesn't really have enough songs in it to make my Musicals list.

Fiddler on the Roof (1971, Norman Jewison)
Nominated By; Citizen Rules
I've seen Fiddler on the Roof several times, and I love it. It's a great movie with some amazing songs. It has a good chance to make my list.

Across the Universe (2007, Julie Taymor)
Nominated By: cricket
I watched Across the Universe for the Directed by Women countdown, and it made my list. (I think it was my #24 or #25.) I'm not a big fan of The Beatles, but I enjoy listening to their music every once in a while. I liked the movie mostly because of the way it integrated the songs into the movie.
