3 Star movies you suggest people see

Tools

I think it the most underrated rating. I've just watched 2 films absolutely different from each other in every way, The Bikeriders streaming on Peacock, and Downton Abbey: A New Era, still have 30 minutes left of it. Both are good movies, but nothing exceptional. Without hesitation I'd suggest someone see them.

We talk of classics, blockbusters, and masterpieces constantly. What of a movie that's simply good, enjoyable, and yet not innovative. What are some good 3 star movies you'd suggest?

Two I recommend are The Physician with Ben Kingsley and Stellan Skarsgård and the other is Agora with Rachel Weisz.

I've rated 1625 films 3 stars (or a 6/10). There are a lot I would recommend. Since the musical countdown is coming up, here are some of my 3 star musicals that I would recommend:

A Chorus Line
Beach Party
Blue Hawaii
Boy! What a Girl!
Broadway Melody of 1940
Down Argentine Way
For Me and My Gal
Girls! Girls! Girls!
Gold Diggers of 1937
Les Girls
Lullaby of Broadway
Spring Parade
Three Little Girls in Blue
Where Do We Go from Here?
Xanadu

Movies from this year and the last five that come very close to 4 stars or more, but don't quite make it:

2019: The Platform
2020: Love and Monsters
2021: Cruella
2022: Hellraiser
2023: Dumb Money
2024: Lisa Frankenstein

No Holds Barred
Masters of the Universe
Howard the Duck

There, a triple feature to never be topped.

This is a valuable thread for film recommendations, but the 3-star rating can mean wildly different things for different people. In my old rating system a 3/5 was already for films that I was disappointed with but still thought OK. In my new rating system, the 3/5 rating is actually for films that are special: important, exceptional, or otherwise valuable.

I haven't seen Agora but I watched The Physician and it is well worth watching.

Of those that I've seen I'd also recommend those I bolded.

No Holds Barred
Masters of the Universe
Howard the Duck

Howard the Duck if for no other reason it's a good study in how a film can be different and fail at the box office and yet still do a whole lot of things right. I remember being impressed with the special effects and the attitude of the duck. I think that people at the time didn't get what the film was doing and was hoping for a Disney type movie which it ain't.

Well I have hundreds of these
s, here's a few to start with:

The High and the Mighty 1954
The Star Chamber 1983
Leviathan 1989
Below 2002
The Manchurian Candidate 2004
Breach 2007
Man on a Ledge 2012
Trouble with the Curve 2012
The Place Beyond the Pines 2012
Lincoln 2012
The Admiral: Roaring Currents 2014
The Magnificent Seven 2016
Accident Man 2018
The Wolf’s Call 2019

There's loads more where that came from so lemme know if/when you need another batch..
I don't really do newer films much, but The High and the Mighty is pretty darn fun.

Well I'm not a mind reader but I'd assume the idea was to pick a few that stand out somehow

D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)
The Crucible (1996)
Hansel & Gretel (2013) - made by The Asylum

Slightly off topic, I could recommend a 2 star movie, The Bodyguard (1992) starring Whitney Elizabeth Houston. The greatest terrible movie ever made.

Would these count as 3*? All in my top 250:

Black Orpheus (1959) Brazil
One Eyed Jacks (1961)
Bay of Angels (1963)
Closely Watched Trains (1966) Czech
KES (1969)
Walkabout (1971)
The Exorcist (1973)
Killer of Sheep (1977)
Homecoming (1984) Hong Kong
Fatal Attraction (1987)
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Withnail & I (1987)
Spoorloos the Vanishing (1988) Netherlands
State of Grace (1990)
The Commitments (1991)
Trees Lounge (1996)
Pusher (1999) Denmark
Sexy Beast (2000)
Sideways (2004)
Crazy Heart (2009)
Fish Tank (2009)
Palm Springs (2020)

Peeping Tom (1960)
Symptoms (1976)
Bates Motel (1987)
Insidious (2010)
I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

in no special order.
I've never heard of Bates Motel, is it anything to do with the Psycho film?

I go around the charity/thrift shops and pick up all kinds of dvds, I must have over a hundred, including box sets 🤗

2022: Hellraiser

I loved Hellraiser (2022)! It's a really fresh take on the series. I agree on the rest too, but the Platform was a little too obsessed with poop and pee, for my taste.

I watched Will Any Gentleman (1953) today and rated it 3 stars. It's worth a watch if you like British comedies from the 50s. I watched God Bless America (2011) yesterday and thought it had some funny moments and an interesting, albeit flawed, story. I would recommend it if you like dark, violent comedies.
