Guys and Dolls remake - Rob Marshall to direct

Sony has been working on a Guys and Dolls remake for a while, now it looks as though they've settled on Rob Marshall as the director for the musical project.

TriStar has the rights to Damon Runyon’s original short stories, which tackled gamblers, gangsters, and the women who love them, as well as the rights to the Tony-winning Broadway musical and the 1955 film starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra.

The ‘Guys and Dolls’ remake was originally supposed to star Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead roles; They’ve since left the project. Marshall was originally offered to direct ‘Guys and Dolls’ right after “Chicago” got released, in 2003, but he told the Guardian that he planned to give musicals a rest.

We really don't need a remake of Guys and Dolls. Can they not make a new original musical?
Yes, they can. It's called Wicked

Thrilled about a Guys and Dolls remake…I’ve always had issues with the 1955 film. Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson? Seriously? And that’s just the tip of the musical iceberg.

How would you feel if they cast Timothee as Sky Masterson?

Trouble with a capital "T"
I just seen Guys and Dolls a week ago. Sky Masterson was a confident, suave, high rolling gambler and risk taker. Timothee or Gosling don't fit that bill. Who's needed is someone with a persona like a modern day Gene Kelly, is there any actor like that?

I haven't seen Timothée Chalamet in much, but I liked him in Wonka. However from what I've seen of him, I think he might be better for Frank Sinatra's roll as Nathan Detroit.

I think the closest to Gene Kelly nowadays might be Hugh Jackman. He can sing, dance, act, and he has charisma.

Agreed! I hadn't thought of him, but now that you mention him, yes he has the charisma and charm that Kelly had and that's what Marlon Brando lacked as Sky Matherson.

It has been confirmed, Rob Marshall is directing this. Now the only question is who they're going to cast?

This one has taken awhile, but maybe Lady Luck finally has turned for an updated movie musical of Guys and Dolls. TriStar Pictures has teamed Chicago helmer Rob Marshall to direct a new film adaptation of Frank Loesser’s box office smash hit musical. Marshall and John DeLuca will team with John Requa & Glenn Ficarra to write the script.

John Goldwyn, Marc Toberoff and Marc Platt are producing with Marshall and DeLuca. Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are overseeing for the studio.

Based on stories by Damon Runyan about gamblers and gangsters in the 1920s and ’30s, Guys and Dolls premiered on Broadway in 1950, where it ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show has had several Broadway and London revivals, as well as a 1955 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. The 1992 revival starring Nathan Lane and Faith Prince won four Tony Awards including Best Revival.

This is sure to set in motion a lot of lust from leading men and ladies who can sing and dance. When Deadline revealed that Fox finally tied down the rights a couple years ago, the studio was eyeing a pairing of Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the roles made famous by Sinatra and Brando.

Why doesn't Gosling fit the bill?

Jackman would be a great Sky Masterson now that I think about it.

Why doesn't Gosling fit the bill?
Ryan Gosling is like the nice guy, the best friend type. I'm not saying he doesn't have the acting chops to do it, but he'd be cast against type.

Casting against type is not always a bad thing...look at Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People

If they cast Jackman, he'd be twice as old as Brando was when he played Sky Masterson
