The Deer Hunter is a memorable film, one of the best of it's year for sure - but Apocalypse Now is one of the best of all time, arguably the best of it's decade in my book. The only department in which it loses the edge to TDH is the set of performances - as DeNiro / Walken / Streep give some of their finest work ever... otherwise, it was never that close for me.

The Deer Hunter is a bit ahistorical, it takes place in the early 70s when the war was winding down

Trouble with a capital "T"
I seen The Deer Hunter but so long ago that I can't remember a thing about it, so let's say I didn't watch it. I have seen Apocalypse Now a couple of times and recently. The opening sequence is sublime. But the film goes downhill at the end and finishes rather silly with a Marlon Brando doing a parody of himself.

I don't think I've ever seen The Deer Hunter therefore it wouldn't be fair to vote.

Apocalypse Now kinda looks like a modern fairy tale: a prince is sent to faraway place in order to slay the dragon that terrorizes the king's castle.
One of the characters even mentions "this is better than Disneyland", and there's a harmless but surprising encounter with a white tiger as if it were a mechanical pop-up prop in a Jungle Book theme ride. Dennis Hopper plays a version of the Mad Hatter (I don't remember if there was any tea involved).

I just wish the ending had been a bit weirder.
