Trouble with a capital "T"
Love Vera-Ellen. Fell for her the first time I saw her as "Miss Turnstiles" in On the Town and have loved her in everything I've seen her in since. There is one film on my ballot that she appears in but it's just for one sequence but she's never been so drop-dead sexy as in that film! Hope it shows.
If it is what I think it is I hope it makes it...and I'll say that's the sexiest dance number I've seen her in.

Didn't you watch Rocketman in the Groupwatch? That's were I seen it.
I don't think I caught that one. I took a break from the thread halfway into it to focus on the Hall of Infamy.

I forgot the opening line.
One from my list already! I like getting a toe in the pool early - until I do it doesn't feel like I've officially started to bond with this thread.

92. Tommy (1975) - Ahh Tommy. I saw the film before I heard the album, because I was going through a rock musical phase and watched whatever I could get my hands on from this golden age of rock musical cinema. I was occasionally, briefly, stunned by the fact that Oliver Reed crows so tunelessly - but I think that's a part of the whole picture to me now. I loved the psychedelic madness to Tommy, and I'm glad I saw this musical first, because if I'd heard the album first I'd have thought it awkwardly constructed from The Who's great songs. As it is, it's a fine messianic false-prophet story that rings true. And what about the talent on display?? My goodness! Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Eric Clapton, John Entwistle, Keith Moon, Jack Nicholson, Robert Powell, Pete Townshend, Tina Turner and more! Everywhere you look it's "Wow! Look at who's just popped into this crazy musical!" Crazy it is, which suited me fine and still does - in fact, I love Tommy more now than I did back then. I also love the album now, which I ended up getting into because of course I did, loving this movie. Tommy was my #8.

91. Rocketman (2019) - Fitting, because there's that loose connection to Tommy. I watched Rocketman because along with Bohemian Rhapsody it was a big deal, and I like the music from all of these guys. I thought for a biopic it was good. I don't particularly love music artist biopics, but I thought Rocketman was imaginative, fun and very nice to look at. I can't see myself watching it numerous times over the years, but I'll probably watch it again one day if/when I get the chance, and if I see if going for $1 I'll grab it for my DVD collection. It wasn't on my list though.

Latest Review : The Mob (1951)

#94 - Prince of Egypt - Haven't seen this, wasn't aware it was a musical, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. tbh, not really interested in a mainstream American, animated film from the late 90s.

#93 - On the Town - Haven't seen this. One of those titles, I'm not sure if I've heard before or not, since it's a common phrase. Doesn't look like the type of musical I'd enjoy, but it's Donen and Singin' in the Rain is generally not my type of musical either and yet it worked (I'd say Donen's non-musical, Charade, also is one that tonally is in similar waters as Singin' in the Rain - though more Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief), so I can't completely discount it.

#92 - Tommy - #12 (of 18) on my ballot. It's Ken Russell, who, even when he misses, is often, well, interesting. I heard about this in comparison to Annette when it came out. I finally watched it for this countdown. It was definitely one where I didn't know how I felt about it, but definitely hit the category of, "well, it was interesting and I would watch it again," which is apparently enough to make my ballot for musicals (I apparently couldn't think of 25 movies that managed to clear that bar).

#91 - Rocketman - I have not seen, no great interest to (I'm inherently wary of bio-pics, and not being big on musicals... I would need to have heard some unknown type of specific word of mouth that get me interested in it).

Thursday Next's Avatar
I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
What I think is special about Rocketman is that it's a biopic that is actually a musical, unlike something like Bohemian Rhapsody. So, although it wasn't in contention for my list, I'm glad it made the countdown.

Tommy was in contention but in the end I just didn't remember it well enough to say I liked it more than the ones I picked.

The "Jazz Up Your Lingerie" number gets most of the attention,.
I misread that and thought it must be a very different kind of film.

Tommy is the first from my list to make it. I had it at #24. I can't say I'm a big fan of it (we're talking musicals, there's only a few I am a fan of) but it's Ken Russell and you can't go wrong with Ken even when it's bad and this isn't that. I'm not a fan of The Who and I've never heard the album, but this is the kind of Russell madness that I can enjoy even if I don't like it. If that makes sense? Plus, Pinball Wizard is a great song, so I'd have put in on my list just for that.

EDIT: Seen neither of the last selection.

I liked Begin Again and considered it for my ballot, but ultimately didn't vote for it. I really, really didn't like the 1961 version of West Side Story, so I didn't bother watching the remake.

I think my overall "dislike" for both West Side Story films is no secret around here. As a Puerto Rican, I don't think it is an honest representation of our heritage. But even if I were to put aside that, the central story between Maria and Whatshisname is not good. The supporting cast, especially Ariana De Bose and Mike Faist are good, though, but that's about it (Here's my full review)

I haven't seen Begin Again. Although Raul was campaigning for me to check it out, I just couldn't get to it. Looking forward to other Carney's, though.

I adore Begin Again, though I didn't have room for it on my ballot...because I may have voted for one or two other John Carney joints. I am very happy Begin Again made it, even without my support.

I'm afraid West Side Story felt more like an exercise in Spielberg ticking the "I've directed a musical" box than a deeply felt film. At least he knows where to put the cameras.

I haven't seen Begin Again but I suspect it's one I might like.

Tommy is a bizarre gem that didn't quite make my list. It's certainly in my top 40. It brings introspection and existential dread to new levels. Brilliant songs, and unapologetic strangeness that a Muppet fan like myself appreciates.

Why it felt the need to have the main character's mother writhe in gallons of baked beans, like a pig in swill, is beyond me. The homophobia wasn't necessary either, but I'll blame that on the time period of was made in.

I really enjoyed it.

I've not seen the WSS remake and have no desire to, although I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy it more than the original. There's really no other option.

I've heard of Begin Again but didn't even know it was a musical.

Also, looking at those numbers and how far we are along, I'm really starting to worry that my campaign for a certain movie didn't succeed.
